We drove down to Skinningrove village, to check whether the museum was openn. Unfortunately it wasn't, but not prepared to give the site a negative review, as when up and running, this is obviously a great experience. Worth a walk along the beach though.

We were so disappointed to visit the site to find two men with hard hats coming towards us out of the gate and a make-shift sign saying the museum was closed for refurbishment. I have no idea of an opening date but it is the beginning of the tourist season... The area of Skinningrove seems very down at heel and dilapidated.

We arrived, unknown to us, five minutes before closing time. This didn't put them off in the slightest. We were treated to a superb guided tour, by two very knowledgeable gentlemen. It was made all the more interesting because I had ancestors who had worked in the mine. Well worth taking the time to visit. I use a walking stick so it might have been tricky to get around, but it turned out fine.

I can't praise this place enough. They did their best to make our visit a good one, even though the 'beat from the east' gales had knocked the domed roof in above the main mine shaft, which made it impossible for us to have the full tour down the mine. Even so, we definitely had our money's worth and on top of that we got free entry for the newly built one. We were well impressed! The staff are very knowledgeable and in many cases have worked down the mines themselves. They are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. This is usually a trip down one of the nine shafts, so if you're claustrophobic I suggest you miss this part, but you will still learn a lot from the rest of the tour. Apparently the new build is going to be much better than the old one and will have lots more to interest you. I can't wait to see it! I can highly recommend this place to visit.

As the original ironstone mine was situated on this site, it was natural to pop along to look at the museum while we were on holiday in Skinningrove. Was a very interesting visit and were given two different talks and lots of facts about the start of the old mine and how it had started and progressed over the years since it was first built, also a short video to begin the tour. There were also some amusing tales in the talks and was all very enjoyable. Admission is very reasonable and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Allow about an hour and a half for the tour.
