Having trawled the internet for a wet day activity that wasn't eating we found this Museum. Not sure what to expect we turned up and had a pleasant surprise. You are guided on a tour by volunteers rather than just wander about by yourself and it is a nice change. There isn't enough to keep you out of mischief for... More

it looks like nothing from the outside - o.k. ist a mining musuem ;-) - we almost didn´t go in. But we had nothing else to do and it was raining so we did. To keep it short: We spent 1 1/2 hours with our three kids 16,11 and 9 - well entertained and educated at the same time, lovely... More

Educational and interesting - kids loved it, but got a bit scary on the dark. The staff were attentive and full of facts and took a lot of time over us.

We visited the area in July when we were researching ancestry and found from the census that my husband's great grandfather was a miner during the late 1800's. We had no idea the museum existed and came on it by chance but it was a very lucky chance as it was superb. It really brought the past to life and... More

Unfortunately the shaft has been closed for health and safety until repairs are done. However we were still handed a hard hat and given an informative and entertaining view of life down the mine. Worth a visit, and even more so when the main attraction re-opens.

We're sorry for any disappointment caused by the temporary closure of the North Drift, but are pleased that you still enjoyed your visit to the Museum. Repairs to the North Drift are unfortunately taking longer to carry out than we originally anticipated but we are confident that they will be completed in time for the start of our 2017 season.... We decided to look at the museum on our holiday when the weather was a bit too cold to be at the beach. so glad we visited. The staff were very helpful and knowledgable. We did the tour which is approx an hour and a half. The 2 gents that did the tour made it very enjoyable. We had 4... More

Part of the mine was shut down for maintenance but it did not detract from the experience. The three presenters were full of enthusiasm together with a great deal of knowledge. All three were very humorous in their delivery and interacted well with the group.

Found out about the museum whilst trying to research the life of a Loftus ironstone miner in the early 1900s and so we scheduled in a trip whilst touring the north east, as the museum can help with family history research, through their online records of employees. A valuable resource. Unfortunately we arrived later than anticipated, after 3pm on a... More
