This huge temple is visited by innumerous people everyday but still remains clean enough to attract devotees from all over the world. This is not a picnic spot nor it is a made-up modern temple decorated with flowers and scents. Those who know it's worth don't fail to visit here.

We went there 1 day in advance. Stayed in Siva murugan Lodge. Its like any other famous Murugan temple, where the iyers throng to make money and take you inside.
As soon as you enter, near the counter you will see many iyers (acting as receptionist) offering to take you inside. Basically they cannot take you inside directly. There will be a linked person who can enter the garbagraham, who will actually do the pooja for you.
They are totally rip off.
Please get proper guidance. We wanted to do abishegam. so even to sit and watch that, it is dependent on VIP booking. 1000 RS per person charge, which someone directly collects inside.
There is a valli and shiva temple underground, No one will even tell you that there is such a place to visit in tiruchendur. Ask for it and go. We missed it.

Awesome divine experience. Those who are coming from Tirunelveli could opt 7.10 am passenger yo tiruchendur. It might take around 1.75hrs but would love the journey as we will be enthusiastic to see the pea cocks, paddy fields, banana etc...
From Tiruchendur station, u will get an auto and they might charge Rs.50 and will drop in the western side of the temple.
Cloak room is available in both the sides of the temple. For us, being week day, FREE QUEUE was almost empty and good darshan in just 5 min. Be wary of the business tactics of the priests for dakshina. U will be in a totally different world when u r inside it. Dress code it seems trousers are allowed for gents, but shirt seems doubtful. U can carry ur bags along with mobile phone. Prasadam in the form of various items like murukku, appam etc. available both inside & outside the temple.
Clean Toilet facility available (seems Indian closet- Senior citizens might find it difficult) in the western as well as south west gates at free of cost. We saw ample parking space, but seems chargeable -around Rs. 75 for cars.
Plenty of hotels available and can enjoy good food with great service at a reasonable price.
For those returning via train from Tiruchendur coukd try taking train tickets via UTS mobile app as the ticket counters seem closed from 12.30 pm to 2 pm.

After arriving at Tirunelveli from Bangalore by train, we got into another train coming from Egmore to Tiruchendur. Within forty five minutes we reached Tiruchendur, a town located in Tuticorin Dist, Tamilnadu. The Murugan temple is not far from the town. We can go by auto to the holy temple which is located just 200 meters from the sea shore. Before entering the temple devotees take holy bath in the sea and then proceed to bathe with water from a well called Nali Kinaru. Lord Murugan created this well by his spear to quench the thirst of his followers while fighting with Surapadman and other demons. One has go down the steps to bathe with water from the well. The water of this well is said to have many curative properties and taste very sweet A very big welcome arch is seen at the front leading us towards a very long walkway . The Raja Gopuram is 133 feet high with nine tiers. Many shops and stalls are seen while we move towards the sanctum. This temple is unique as this is the only Murugan temple established near the sea shore while all other five shrines are set upon the hill. The temple is very much crowded and some devotees in wet clothes are seen doing Anga Pradakshan (rolling on the bare floor) to show their devotion to the Lord. The ticket counters are arranged in the inner hall. We felt very much confused as there are no clear instructions about sale of tickets for various sevas. Some priests are approaching devotees and taking some amount illegally and taking them inside to provide special darshan. Such type of dubious practices will be stopped if ticket counters are kept outside the temple with a helpdesk to guide the devotees. The titles and instructions may be displayed in English and Hindi along with Tamil to help the devotees coming from other regions.
Mythologically speaking, Lord Murugan killed the arrogant demon, Sura Padman, who got many boons from Lord Shiva and started pestering gods and pious people. While fighting the demon transformed himself into a gigantic tree. Lord Murugan split it with his spear. One half of it was transformed into a peacock while the other half into a rooster. Lord made the pea-cock as his mount (Vahan) and the Rooster as a symbol of his banner (flag). Later Murugan installed three idols of Lord Shiva and prayed and absolved himself from the sin of killing a staunch devotee of Shiva. Inside the sanctum we see the idol of Murugan with a Shiva Lingam on the left. A little further on the left we see Lord Murugan with six faces flanked by his two consorts. Outside the sanctum we can see Lord Murugan slaying Sura Padman with his mighty spear.On the left side of the sanctum there is Panchalingam, five Lingas. In the second Prakara the shrines of Vallabha Vinayaka. Venkatachalapathy and Santhana Krishna are seen. In the frirst prakara the shrines for Valli and Devasena are seen. We can also see the shrines of Bhairava, Dakshinamurthy, Anjaneya and Nataraja. Outside the northern side of this temple there is a grotto called Vall’s cave carved under a sandstone cliff near the sea shore. Two idols of Valli and Lord Dattatreya were installed. A stone mandapa with pillars is seen here. On the walls of mandapa, the marriage of Lord Murugan with Valli and the slaying of Surapadman are painted recently by Nambi Rajan.
This temple might have been built in seventh century as per one of the hymns sung by one of the Nayanmars. Two stone inscriptions were found dating back to 875 A.D. mentioning many charities done by Varaguna Pandyan to this temple. Primarily this temple was built with sandstone and was corroded by sea winds. A saint called Mouna Swami re-constructed the temple with three circular compound walls (Prakarams) with black granite stone. It took nearly 72 years for completion of this temple. Three hundred years back the Raja Gopuram was built by Sri Desikamurthy Swami of Tiruvaduthurai Mutt. The view of sea and surrounding cliffs add more charm and grace to this beautiful temple.

I am a native to Thoothukudi district which is just a 20km away from Tiruchendur from my home. Still I wont suggest this temple is an excellent place. I say this beacuse apart from darshan of the deity Lord Muruga nothing else is okay. I mean if I want to list out. Here goes
1. Approach road from Thoothukudi(Tuticorin) to Tiruchendur - Worst road in the road. Even though the distance is 20kms, it takes nearly 1.5hrs to reach and not because of traffic.
2.Cleanliness: With just a fraction of people visting the temple when compared to Tirupati, The temple adminsitration is not batting an eye to the cleanliness of the surrounding areas of the temple.
3.Most Important of all - Priest's attitude: If you dont put some money on the plate of the priest then he will act as if you have come to steal their money. Also the constant nagging of priests if some one doesnt put money in their archanai plate.
4.VIP/VVIP/VVVIP/VVVVIP&etc: VIP treatment in this temple is disheartening. Long ago a maharaja builds a temple for all to be taken for granted only for VIPs.

Lord Guru bhagawan worshipped here. so this temple is famous for Lord muruga as well as Guru bhagawan. when tsunami came the water came around temple, but never entered the temple. u can do pariharam for guru here.U can go by bus or train or car from tirunelveli or thoothukudi.Lot of hotels like chendur hotel, mani iyer hotel etc., here have good facilities to stay and eat. soorasamharam festival during nov- december is famous here. Prasadam is thinai(grain)

I am going to temple from my childhood nearly 50 years so many changes early morning 5.30 am dhardhsn is the best. You can stay with the temple guest house or good hotels are there nearby. You can spend the early night hours on the beach. You can take bath in the sea and then in the sacred well nazhikinaru

This Devasthanam runs Murugan Temple which everybody know.
One should not miss the Valli Cave which is situated on the northeast corner of Murugan Temple. The cave has two deities - Dattaraya and Goddess Valli.
There is a cost associated to visiting the temple - Rs. 10/- per head.
Please do not miss this if you visit Tiruchendur Murugan Temple.

Everything about this temple is very calming, the drive surpassing 100”s if not thousands of wind farm, the nice beach and all around resorty atmosphere.Temple has rich mythological History and thoroughly enjoyed the trip, darshan and my personal moments of silence within the temple and outside the sanctum sanctorum.The heightened frenzy of worshipping Lord Murugan was so intense here that couldn’t resist and buy a long Vel- the divine spear of the Lord as a memento from the gift shops outside.would definitely make a point to visit this Temple whenever I land in Tiruvananthapuram.

Also can you please confirm if before doing angapradakshinam should we take a dip in the sea.
