The place was virtually deserted when we visited early May. It was an absolutely wonderful change from noisy, noisy Lima. We had a great guide and we spent about 3 hours in Chavin. I recommend a visit to the museum before going to the site itself so you can get a better perspective of the site. It's worthwhile having a small torch as you go down the steps into the labyrinths. The one on the left side is the longer than the one on the right. To get to Chavin from Huaraz you drive through a pass of 4,516 metres so you do need to be careful about the effects of high altitude.…

Chavin is famous with Archaeologists but very few tourists go there and it is a pity. The site is impressive and very fundamental to all cultures of the Andes. It is far from Cusco or Lima but quite close to Huaraz.

I found the ruins to be extraordinary and well worth the trip. Went early December, perhaps not the best month to go. It was cold. But loved the place. The town is quiet. Which is a nice reprieve from other tourist places I Peru. However, after leaving the ruins I went to get some food at the first, tourist restaurant as I came out. There was a large group already eating there and I was turned away !!! Which I found very strange.. Something to look at there !!…
