About
The romantic gothic Castle - a product of the early 19th century - stands on a high rise above a lake. The Castle is surrounded by sweeping lawns and a variety of mature trees, including Cedars of Lebanon, Oak, and Chestnut. The gardens surrounding the Castle provide a lovely mix of colour and height, with intriguing walks around the lake. There is a Temple Water Garden, Rose Garden, a variety of mixed borders. Plantings are planned to provide colour at all times of the year.

- Lucille B21 contributionsMother's Day afternoon teaThis is an impressive place to visit. Today the daffodils were stunning . The weather for this Mother's Day visit was beautiful , just as well given that we queued outside the Afternoon tea venue well past the booked 3 p.m. arrival . People at the front of the queue were served Bucks Fizz after they complained , server then disappeared back inside before he reached the rest of us . Our booking was for 6 , the table had been set for two , another wait whilst tables were rearranged , one without a cloth ! To be fair the young lady checking bookings did apologise and the , very young , staff did their best but lacked guidance e.g . We were given 2 small teapots for 6 and we , along with others that we witnessed , had to ask for milk, cream and jam for scones etc . Food was enjoyable , once we finally got it , and the guitarist provided great background music . We decided that the experience could be best described as Fawlty Towers in a tent . Such a shame as we'd all looked forward to a delicious tea in pleasant surroundings and our daughter, who had booked as my Mother's Day treat at not trivial expense was , understandably upset .Good afternoon, Firstly, and above all else, please accept our apologies for the disappointment caused on Mothering Sunday. We have had discussions with the people that run the Cafe and immediate steps have been taken to avoid such problems happening again. Please do email in to us (eo@chol-estates.co.uk) where we can deal with your complaint more effectively. - katers85Nantwich, United Kingdom55 contributionsChaotic afternoon teaWe were also on the 3pm booking like the previous guests commented (not associated). We had booking for 8. We were let into tent at approx 3.20/3.25. People at front were given drinks but we were not. We were a chair short at booking and had to find an extra chair. We noticed people were getting offered second drinks/snacks before we had anything. It was close to 4pm before we were even offered a tea pot, it felt like we had totally been forgotten and we had to chase everything. The milk was served in a cup, so it spilled everywhere and there was not enough tea for the whole table, so we were up and down just trying to get the basics. The kids picnic boxes were forgotten and the last thing you want is hungry bored children. We had two sandwiches each, it seemed pot luck how much food each table was given. The options selected totally went out the window and the savoury options that should have been given were not provided. Drinks that came for kids were wrong, kids sandwiches were wrong. I had to question whether we would be given mimosas, they finally came as we were finishing up. The food we were given was lovely but it was total chaos from start to finish and the experience was ruined due to the excessive wait times, chasing everything and randomness of food and drinks provided. The guitarist was fab and I think the staff tried but maybe unprepared/overwhelmed.Good afternoon, Firstly, and above all else, please accept our apologies for the disappointment caused on Mothering Sunday. - DezzieHawarden, United Kingdom5 contributionsDisorganisedBooked the Mother’s Day afternoon tea for 1pm. Queued to get seated and our food came out quickly. We then had to wait over 30 minutes for our pot of tea, which was only suitable for one person. When other people’s food was brought out we noticed that they’d missed out the cupcakes on our platter. They also seemed to forget to give us the welcome glass of mimosa that had been advertised. I would definitely not book again. The whole thing was a shambles, with no organisation. The only reason I’ve given two marks is because the daffodils were lovely outside.Good afternoon, Firstly, and above all else, please accept our apologies for the disappointment caused on Mothering Sunday. Not a lot to see in the gardens.
Tea room to visit and the old Chapel.
Disappointing and not worth the £9 per person entrance money plus another £5 each for the gardeners tour and talk.

It poured with rain on the day we visited but even so the gardens were delightful. Had to avoid a few puddles but all in all very nice gravel pathways through the gardens. Walked up to the chapel as well which was a delight. Richard on the entrance was brilliant and imparted so much information about the place and the family. We really enjoyed ourselves.

We had breakfast at the Cholmondeley Farm Shop and Cafe and it was excellent.
The cafe is nicely decorated, the staff are very friendly and the food is delicious.
The brunch bagel was quite possibly the best I’ve ever had. Avocado, halloumi, bacon, fried egg with chilli jam! The coffee here is fantastic too. We will definitely be back when in the area again.

A good visit to a pleasant site. gardens are well spread with a good map provided, which helps with orientation. Some very fine specimen trees - would benefit from a "tree trail".

We visited on a sunny June summer day (2 adults).
Friendly reception. Absolutely lovely gardens. Very well kept. Great for slow strolls although not much to interestst or occupy children. You can take dogs on lead.
Had refreshments seated outside. Prices as expected. Recommended for keen gardeners.

It's a nice visit but probably once and that's enough. You can't go in the garden and there is only one loop and you're done basically. But the staff are super friendly and the sat nav did bring us to the back of the estate for some reason and it isn't manned and I tried to call but they only man the phones mon to Friday according to their voice mail...begs the question, you're open Sunday, closed Tuesday and Friday... so why aren't your phones lines reflective to when you're actually open?
You park on a field and there's plenty of space, so long as you don't get any idiots parked right behind you...we saw some of that happening today. Perhaps they should have parking marshals or something as some people weren't bright enough to figure out the cars wouldn't be able reverse when leaving.
There are some lovely flowers here though and the majority of the presentation of the gardens are nice.
It does open on random days, but it was still nice to experience it nevertheless.

Really disappointed when we got there, the website made it look amazing with lots to do, but we weren’t allowed to go to the castle or anything else, all that was allowed was walking around the grass areas, this was so boring
Could of done that at home for nothing
I traveled from Flintshire to visit this place and paid £18 which was not worth the money, also the website prices were different than at the entrance
I would not recommend unless it’s just a walk around the field or woods

We visited Cholmondeley Castle Gardens today for the Easter Sunday event. When we got there parking was free, we then had a stroll through the gardens that are immaculate and beautiful, you can tell how much work and attention to detail has gone into them. Following this our group then went to the tea rooms, from previous reviews I can see that they have adapted and have now added independent vendors in which adds far more variety and good prices too with no queues. We had a lovely crepe and hot chocolate. The animals there were great and the kids absolutely loved holding the owl and tarantula and meeting the Easter Bunny went down as a favourite with the kids. The atmosphere was relaxed and good family fun, staff working the event were all so very pleasant. Well organised and would definitely recommend to friends for next year. Thank you for a fabulous day out.

What is the best time of year to visit the gardens? To get the most out of the beautiful flowers in bloom?

Early Spring to see the beautiful bulbs late spring for the rhododendrons, summer for glorious flowers and autumn for the vivid colours of trees.
Why is the hunting of our beautiful wildlife allowed on these premises, I thought it was against the law but obviously not?! Will definitely avoid this attraction if this is the case.
Are dogs allowed inside the tea room if on the lead?
