The most ancient castle in Russia
Nov 2020 • Solo
I came to Derbent to see its main attraction - the fortress. There you can climb a steep stone staircase or drive directly to the top of the mountain to the fortress by car. Entrance to the territory of the fortress and the museum - 250 rubles. The territory of the fortress is not very large, you can walk along the walls, some of which can be climbed. From above there is a beautiful view of the city and the sea. There is little left inside, there are several underground prisons - Zindanov, a water storage, a collection of stone anchors. There is also a small exhibition of paintings in a detached building. There is also a small museum on the territory where you can see various archaeological finds, coins, jugs, weapons and clothes. Interesting in principle. There is also a small souvenir shop. Definitely worth a visit.

derbinsky fortress
Jun 2020
Just a week ago, I returned from a fairly long trip to Dagestan, the end point of which was Derbent. Why should the story begin with him? And by seniority!
After all, it is here that one of the most ancient citadels of Russia is located, which is included in the top 100 of its main attractions - the Derbent fortress. About it and speech.

First about dates. They seem to differ. According to the official version, the history of the Derbent fortress began five millennia ago.
But Patriotic derbentci fervently assured us that the historians are mistaken, and it is necessary to have about seven thousand years. They say that some facts have recently been revealed-artifacts, etc., etc.
Five-seven... Who will give more? One thing is obvious, for its age, the fortress looks very good!

Centerpiece of Derbent

This citadel is a must-visit for anyone in Derbent. One of the few UNESCO sites in all of the North Caucasus. Fascinating history, definitely recommend using a guide to get the full experience. It's location above the city and views of the city and Caspian Sea are awesome.

The walls of this OLD fortress are still in remarkably good condition, but there is very little left inside the walls.

An empty ancient citadel
Jun 2018
The inside of the citadel is actually a bit disappointing as it is practically empty. However, the views are worth it.

Ancient citadel of Azerbaijan history

Dəmir Qapı Dərbənd is the ancient citadel of Azerbaijani local nations there. You can glimpse to the city from here. Unfortunately I could not enter inside of museum because of night visit, but you can spend interesting time here.

The highlight of any visit to Derbent
May 2017 • Friends
The 7th century fortress and the city walls once provided a bulwark against invaders from the north. Today, this UNESCO site is the highlight of any visit to Derbent. Parts of the walls have been restored - so much so that in some cases new parts have been built to replace presumably missing bits. Inside the fortress, the grounds have been set out with lawns and flower beds. From the ramparts there are good views across the town and down to the Caspian Sea. Some buildings were locked. There is also a small museum in the fortress but the descriptions of the objects are only in Russian. As for the city walls, inside the town they are in parts almost hidden by buildings and could benefit from having their features made more visible and obvious.

We were lucky enough to have a Russian translator to translate the words of our guide. Make suere you have a translator and make sure to hire a guide.

Even if you have no guide this place is very beautiful. The inside is beautifully landscaped and relaxing, take a picnic.

The fortress contains a sunken church which is pre Islamic, this structure was used as a water tank by the Khans.

Lovely views across the Caspian and lots of interesting history
