Not much of a garden, it more like a hike in the jungle. some trails are very hard to follow and i could see people getting lots. Beware of the bats that live in the well. when we were there 100's came flying out.

We visited the gardens in May following a recommendation in a guide book. It is a nice place to go for a walk - we spent around 2 hours there but I don't think you would want to stay much longer. Tickets were inexpensive and...More

Great site for birds but takes time - don't rush it! This is my 3rd visit but the first time I have caught up with the spider monkeys. My best visit was during migration periods April and Sept loads of American warblers then.

It is difficult to find much real nature near to Cancun. Most of the town and hotel zone is devoid of birds and native plants. This park is a short drive away and provides a close hand glimpse of the native ecosystem plus a small...More

We enjoyed the wide variety of plants, trees, and cacti. But loved the monkeys the most! My Spanish being poor, I did wish for more English annotations.

Expected a garden with flowers and tropical plants and for it to be maintained. No longer what it once was. Condos have been built up around it and it no longer really maintained. Went there to go bird watching and was also disappointed with the...More

Some of the main species of interest are labelled especially on the trees not so much on the herbaceous plants. It's not like a botanic gardens in Europe but well worth a visit.

Hi! I am planning a visit to Mexico February 3 to 10 2015. My wife, son and I will be staying at Grand Sirenis near Akumal. I am a birdwatcher and I have visited the Yucatan several times. I have a few questions concerning the Botanical Gardens that I am hoping you might be able to answer: 1) the entrance seems hard to find, according to information on the Internet. Is it on the main highway between Akumal and Playa del Carmen (#307)? 2) should I take a taxi? Collectivo/ It appears to be about an hour from Akumal but Google Maps isn't actually finding the Botanical Gardens for me. 3) what is the best time of day, and how long should I allow for a visit? 4) how safe/kid-friendly is this place? I have read about a lot of mosquitoes... 5) do you have any information on the birds that are likely to be seen at the Botanical Gardens? Many thanks; John

It is a considerable distance from Akamal to the Gardens and would be quite expensive in a taxi. Hiring a car for a few days may afford some flexibility to visit other sights as well. It is true that the entrance is a little... More
