Step back in to medieval history

Wonderful castle ruined but not entirely. The wonderful red local stone, one of the the early ways that the English kept the Welsh at bay.

Operated by English Heritage, this historic castle is set in the beautiful Wye valley close to Ross on Wye Lots of fun for kids and plenty of scope for their imagination to run wild. This historic castle is well preserved. Entry includes free audio guides for those that wish. Dungeons and towers to explore, also has a cafe and memorabilia... More

Goodrich Castle, hanging over the River Wye, is a wonderful example of the English defence of the border between England and Wales. Beautifully preserved walls and structures, moat and buttresses. A delight to wander around and view the magnificent Wye Valley. Lovely cafe and gift shop is an added attraction in the fabulous setting. Quite a long walk to the... More

Wow a great find by chance! The audio tour brings the castle to life, very interesting with great views and ideal for families as you can touch and climb everything! We went in a cold day so our advice is to take gloves as your hands get cold holding the audio tour to your ear!

As we visited in November it was open only at weekends and there were a few visitors including ourselves disappointed on that Wednesday. The signage at castle said open, but sadly it wasn't, but had we checked the English heritage website we would have had that info, but wi-fi not too good in that area. Would love to return to... The castle remains hidden until you've walked a little way from the car park - and then presents an impressive view. A great place to explore - you can go down to the dry moat, climb up the tower (up a rather dark spiral staircase at the top) for glorious views over the surrounding countryside, and just wander around inside... We all really enjoyed ourselves looking round the ruins of this magnificent castle. There is a good proportion of signs giving insightful information about the different parts of the castle. The climb up the narrow staircase holding onto the rope was worth it, but took a few mins to get my breath back when at the top. Being able to... More
