It is interesting to visit it because it is a very popular pilgrimage site although it is not a monumental place. These days they were already preparing the pilgrimage and there was already quite an atmosphere. I don't want to think about the pilgrimage since they told us there are 2,000,000 people apart from the horses and carts. The town is very beautiful, all white and typical.

The Cathedral is amazing in its location and construction right into the hillside above the quaint and peaceful town of Biblian. Views of surrounding pastures, mountains across the valley and citizens going about the business of farming and strolling the hillside streets were striking and gave a sense of a more rural (than Cuenca) lifestyle in Ecuador. Geese in the lane, father and daughter strolling in the square, sweeper industriously cleaning the gutters and sidewalks, indigenous family visiting the church and lighting candles. Beautiful carved wood pews and stained glass are housed in a structure where some of the walls are actually the stone mountain side. Our visit was a snapshot in time of the good people and vistas of Ecuador.

This outside of this church is truly magnificent. It is built into the side of the mountain, which leaves areas of bare rock within the church, which is somewhat unusual. The climb to the entrance is not for the faint-hearted. If I remember rightly, it's 129 steep steps.
The inside of the church is somewhat bare, but the smell of fresh cut flowers inside is extremely pleasant.

Dedicated to the Holy Virgin in the appearance of Our Lady of Frost, venerated in Equador, this unforgettable neo-gothic church is hanged on the mountains over the small town of Biblian, near Azogues. A long and straight balcony runs all aside the church, providing imposing views. The church itself is cozy and inspiring. Climb to the upper terrace for more views. Don't miss this sanctuary!

This sanctuary is located between Cuenca and Canar. It is well worth the time to turn off the main road to see it. It is still in use, and the views of the surrounding area are top notch.a

This church is built into the side of a mountain and has an interesting history that you should visit to hear (it was built by townspeople after a prolonged drought). Much of the structure isn't open to the public, but the sanctuary is interesting with it's rear wall of natural stone. Great views of the church and of the surrounding area from the church.

First of all the correct name of this church is "Santuario de La Virgen del Rocio".
It is a Gothic style building in the hill of Zhalao. From the top, beautiful views of the city of Azogues and the Azuay Province.
National Cultural Heritage. Check walls part of the rock of the mountain, lamps and paintings.

The Santuario de la Virgen del Rocio Church in the city of Biblian is a beautiful church built into the side of a mountain.
On our way to Ingapirca, our driver took us here as a side trip. The church is located at one of the highest points in the city of Biblian. Lucky for us, we were able to drive up to the base of the church since it’s a long and winding road to get there. The church is unique in that it’s built into the side of the mountain and supported by 49 granite columns. The Gothic Revival architecture which began construction in 1893 is fascinating.
Besides the actual church, you can go inside the crypt and walk up to the top of the church for an excellent view of the city. If you feel real adventurous, you can walk to the very top of Mount Zhalao where they have the stations of the cross along the way.

We do not usually visit many churches but our local guide took us here and we were most impressed. It is built up high on a rocky hill, in fact most of the building is carved into the side of the hill. Inside it is quite spartan but that is the attraction, the locals keep it full of flowers and there is a peace about the place. We visited it on the way to the Ingapirca ruins farther north from Cuenca.
