Worth the moderate difficulty hike up and down!!!
We are in our mid 60s and exercise but not regularly. It took us four hours r.t. to hike the Preikestolen minus picture taking and having snacks when we got there (10:00 a.m. to 14:20 p.m.). For me it was a moderate difficulty trail although on our return hike it was raining; hence, our descent was more challenging. There are no outhouses along the trail so use the bathroom before you start your hike. Mr. Sander of Thon Hotel Stavanger advised us not to take a tour; rather to take the bus and hike on our own. We booked the Boreal express bus (pink and white) online. It stops at Klubggata across our hotel when we flag it. Please refer to the pictures to gauge whether or not you would hike the Preikestolen. The incline at the very beginning made me huff and puff but the rest were negotiable. There was a long stretch of stairs of rocks amongst other short ones. Where there are clearings, there are short flat parts of the trail with either gravel or boardwalk. Always look for the steel markers (approximately 18-24” in height and 2” in width) with arrows and distance in order to head in the right direction as there are areas where the semi flat boulders are expansive. The distance sort of encourages you when the climb feels tough. The vista of Lysefjord as you approach the last climb and on the Preikestolen itself is magnificent! It is absolutely worth flying to Stavanger and hiking up the mountain!! We heeded the advice of bloggers and had layers of clothes, hiking boots with very good grip and ankle protection, raincoat in case it rains, water, apples, snack bars, dry clothes to change into, and most importantly, our phones for capturing the captivating scenery. The Hiker’s Cafe was still open on 15 September 2023 so we were able to have hot chocolate after our hike.

Worth the climb up but not easy
My wife and I took her parents on this hike which we were led to believe it was 'moderate' rating. Certainly learnt that European hiking trail grading system is harder than Australia. As such, my in-laws had to stop about 3km in to reserve energy to return back down. Personally I loved the hike and think I could do it comfortably < 3hrs return however took us closer to 5 with the oldies. Thankfully no injuries but I'd hate for someone to get injured up there as no easy access back. Great to see the rock in it's natural beauty but slightly concerned that those people choosing to get the Insta-worthy shot sitting with legs hanging off the edge, would hate for the trail to be closed and fenced because of a careless mistake. Assume the flowing water along the trail is drinkable so no need to pack a heap, just refill.

    One of Norway natural wonders
The towering Pulpit Rock is at the end of 4km trail. It is a hike with moderate difficulty that rewards the adventurous tourists with breathtaking views of the Lysefjord and spectacular scenery. Be sure to prepare yourself for the hike, by wearing comfortable shoes and pants (jeans are not recommended) and by bringing water and food for refueling. Also note that weather conditions can change very fast at the top of the mountain, so it is always advisable to bring additional warm and wetproof clothes. For a complete experience, I recommend taking the Preikestolen cruise & hike, which includes a cruise through the Lysefjord and a bus ride to the beginning of the Pulpit Rock trail. Tickets for this experience can be purchased online.

    Pulpit Rock hike
The weather was wet wet wet so we were surprised the hike was ON. Nonetheless it was a beautiful hike made challenging by the strong winds, heavy rain and hail. Thankfully, we were blessed with some brief fjord views when we reached the Pulpit Rock! Our quiet guide and group was caring and looked out for each other.

all you need to know about preikestolen : Pulpit rock
Hiking to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock is no small feat. From the car park, the hike follows a well-marked trail for an 8-kilometre (5-mile) round trip. This means it'll take around 4–5 hours total. The hike to Pulpit Rock is classified as a moderate hike. you also gotta get to norway so it would be a cool place to visit in the hollydays

ANYONE can do kind of hike, but continue up to the hidden gem!
An amazing hike that anyone can do, anytime of the year.. be aware.. the car parking is £££ (250nok around £20) We went in May and got to the carpark around 11am, there were lots and lots of people so I think in Peak Season it will be really busy and take you twice as long, especially waiting for photos at the top. It took us around 55mins to reach Prekistolen but we hoofed it up without any breaks, we also ran all the way back down (trail runners) so it was a nice challenge for us (1hr 27mins in total) but I think for the average person, take 3-4 hours round trip. ANYONE can do this hike, it's literally made for purpose now; The path has changed alot and 99% of it has been created/laid by the wonderful Nepalese which makes the ground sturdy- even in winter hiking is possible as you don't hike on grassy areas that could be boggy. There are a few nice wooden bridges to cross which makes great photo opportunities also. There is alot of steep sections, so take your time and take plenty of water and snacks. Respect the mountain and be courteous to your fellow hikers. We had glorious sunshine but be mindful the weather can change at any point, take a waterproof jacket as well as warm clothing. TOP TIP: continue the hike up from Prekistolen, follow the red Ts up the side of the mountain and here you can not only enjoy a fresh water spring but we feel there were better photo opportunities as you enjoy looking down onto Preikestolen and also into the magnificent fjord. It is a lot quieter too, less people make the hike further up, we took the opportunity to do a bit of exploring and had our lunch with an amazing view!

    Amazing
This place is stunning, there’s a decent walk to the rock which took us about 75 minutes, when you reach the top you are literally on a platform with a 2000ft drop - no barriers. You can see the platform without going onto it although I would recommend visiting the actual platform. You can also get some decent views of the platform by leaving the actual path to the right on the way down. You don’t have to pay for entry - the best views I’ve ever seen.

    What an incredible experience.
We were staying in Victoria Hotel, Stavanger. Booked on a Boreal bus, Pulpit Rock Tours, picking us up outside the Radisson Blu hotel. Bus on time, and a smooth ride (through a very long tunnel) to the base car park for the hike. It rained all the time but the route is very clearly marked and stone staircases and walkways/bridges are very well maintained. Route very steep in places, and great views along the way. Once actually on the rock, the views are stunning. Quite a breathtaking experience. Took some stunning photographs.

AMAZING view - a bit more than moderate by American standards
I was staying with friends who are Norwegian and I'm pretty sure she is part mountain goat! I found this hike doable, but challenging in some areas. I have had knee reconstruction and have a weaker knee/hamstring on one side, but have done other "moderate hikes" in the US National Parks. If you are afraid of heights - make sure you are mentally prepared for this. There are some areas even my mountain goat Norwegian friend called scary. I would suggest hiking poles, mine had been taken by airport security earlier in the year and I hadn't replaced them. Regret that. Overall worth it, but did take longer than the 2-3 hours some had said.

So we were in Oslo for a 4 day weekend and wondered if we could chance a trip to Pulpit’s Rock and if we would be able to do it in one day and I’m pleased to say you can and it went without a hitch!
We booked a flight from Oslo to Stavanger for 7.55am. This got us to Stavanger for 9 and we made our way to Stavanger city centre. We used Flybussen to book return tickets from Stavanger airport to city centre. We also pre-booked our tickets from Stavanger bus terminal to Pulpit’s rock using pupitrocktours.no - it’s essential to book on advance. We booked the 10.47 bus which meant we had a we hour to spend in Stavanger before heading to pulpit rock, giving us time to stock up on energy bars and water. The journey on the bus from Stavanger to Pulpits rock takes 53 minutes. On arrival, we started the walk straight away and it took us 2.5hrs in total up and back. Unfortunately it was a very unseasonably cloudy day for June so the views were non existent but we enjoyed the hike. We were back down in plenty of time for lunch at the cafe before the bus pick up at 4pm. On return to Stavanger, we went straight for our bus back to the airport to fly back to Oslo. We had booked the 8.55pm flight to allow for any delays etc on buses but we could actually have booked an earlier flight back.

Just got back from the Pulpit Rock hike.
The biggest disappointment of our family trip to Norway. 1) it is NOT an easy and pleasant hike like written in some reviews. It is a “red” hike, where you have a number of steep climbs (up and then down). Yes there are rock “stairs” to help you, but they are not very comfortable. There are some stretches of steep climbing, which will not be comfortable for elderly people or children below 10. There are parts of the hike where you have to walk on some large wet rocks, so proper hiking shoes/ boots are recommended (although I saw some people wearing regular walking/ running sneakers and they managed). 2) Crowds! And crowds again! Maybe we were unlucky to do this hike on the first day after a number of rainy days, but the number of people was just absolutely massive and annoying. You basically walk and climb in the crowd of people going both up and down. There is nothing about serenity, enjoying the nature or anything like that… what you get is just a physical challenge to get to the top (for those who want it). The number of people on the Pulpit Rock itself was so big that we did not want to go on it. Both for comfort and safety reasons. 3) The value of this challenge is very questionable. After the first 2.2 km many people looked exhausted, while you do not really have any views during this strenuous hike up, except for the forest around you. It is only after the first half of the hike when you start seeing some nice views. BUT, those are not something that you cannot get if you travel around Norway by car. Yes, if you come to Norway by ferry or travel by train/ bus the wonderful views over the fjord would be something you have to hike for. We have driven around quite a lot, and we saw some absolutely wonderful views of mountain valleys, and fjords, and rivers. And all of that, without climbing. :))) 4) If you come there by car, beware that parking is going to be a major problem. Parking is very limited and gets full by 9 or 10 am. And then your only option is really to park on the camping grounds, which are 6 km away, or park in the nearby city, which is about 10 km away. And then take a taxi for 200-250 Nkr (20-25 euro) each way to get to the mountain. Parking itself is about €25.
To summarize. If you’re fit and like challenging yourself, if you love hiking, and if you’re ready to come to the mountain at 8 AM, you have a good chance to enjoy it. If you’re a regular tourist, especially traveling around Norway by car, especially traveling with children I would not recommend doing it. Absolute waste of time, money and your energy. :)))

We walked up there on 1st April 22. It was out of season so pretty quiet which is better than it being crowded on the route. The car park was easy to navigate, it was 250 NOK for a days parking (around 22 British Pounds). Crampons are recommended for parts of the hike as it was a bit slippy but could be doable without with care.
I would definitely recommend this hike outside of the summer season to really get the feel of the peace of the view, luckily weather was great so stopped for lunch at the top.
All in all the hike was about 2 hours each way!

This is the do not leave out of your visit to Stavanger experience. Start early morning with the ferry (the ferry port is in town), to avoid the big flow of people. The ferry ride is a wonderful trip itself. You can sit inside, but I decided to enjoy the fresh morning clean air and the scenery around on the open deck. It is a good idea to purchase the ticket ahead of your visit online. It is cheaper and makes the trip easier. The hike to the Pulpit rock is not easy, but I am not a sport person, and was no problem to do the hike. If you are a short person like me, it will be little harder on your legs, because the natural rock steps are pretty high. But walkable. The road takes about 2 hours up. Take some short rests to enjoy the nature around you. Is is so peaceful and majestic. Do the photos on the rock, according to your bravery and afraid or not afraid of highs. I am afraid of highs but was very comfortable on the middle of the pulpit. Enjoy the scenery as long as you wish. It is breathtaking. After you walk out from it back to the hiking trail, do not start down yet. Go straight out to the rocks ahead. Sit down and enjoy looking back at Pulpit rock and the fjord. It is a nice rest before the way down and a different scenery, that not too many tourist will enjoy. Most just go up, take the photos and heads down. The hike down takes about 2 hours too. I can assure you, when you arrive down and take a seat on the bus, you will see tired people around you, including you. But it is a very good kind of tiredness. It will be pretty quiet on the bus back to the ferry. One of the biggest experience of my life. I am so proud to have done it. A must.

I've visited Stavanger in my trip to Scandinavia with the only purpose of doing this hike. I am more than glad that we decided to added as a stop. We were lucky with a perfect sunny day and relatively low crowds on Norway's independence day (May 17). The hike is of moderate difficulty and somebody fit and accustomed to long walks/jogs should be able to do it without too much exertion (be ready for plenty of steps). Dress in layers and wear good boots or hiking shoes. I am a sucker for views and taking pictures so with 45 minutes picnic at the top it took me about 5 hours. The experience at the top cannot be captured by a camera. I hiked Machu Picchu in Peru, Tiger's nest in Bhutan, many hikes in Nepal and other beautiful spots; this one is up there on my top five hikes, If your trip through Norway can afford two days to stop in Stavanger is a must.

Climbing to the Pulpit Rock was an experience for a lifetime.
We took a bus service from Stavanger, so we had 5 hours for the trip up and down the mountain, which was time enough even with a 6 year old. On the path we saw even smaller children and pregnant women as well so although it is categorized to be a hard hike, it is manageable if you respect your own pace. It took us about 2 hours to arrive at the top, we spent about 45 minutes with photos and having lunch with a view and then we made it back to base camp in a little less than 2 hours, making frequent stops and admiring the view.
The path is very well marked, with signs at every 50 meters, counting the distance in each direction. The view is breath taking and well worth the hike.
Due to the pandemic regulations, it is quite complicated to visit Norway as tourists for the time being, so the road up the mountain was not crowded at all and even at the top we had sufficient space to take all the photos we wanted. We visited on a July Monday morning (started climbing at 9 am). If you ever wanted to visit the Pulpit Rock, now would be a good time to avoid crowds.
Everyone should climb to Preikestolen at least once in their life!

Fantastic walk, which is well organized with Sherpa stairs and paths. We started quite early so there were not that many people yet. The view from the plateau itself was magical. For a normally trained Norwegian, this is a pretty straightforward trip. About 2 hours + up and down. Remember good hiking shoes and plenty of water. We met foreign tourists in bathing sandals, cloth shoes and a dress (Yes, a lot of strange "hiking equipment"). Unfortunately, some of the experience was ruined by a Chinese travel companion who went ahead on the way up. They throw rubbish several times straight into nature. It peaked when you changed the diaper on the youngest and threw it away on the path. Several people confronted them with this, but got the answer that in China there are people who clean rubbish, and Norway is probably a rich country that can employ people for this. Also thought the border was closed due to. Corona

We had a group of seven led by Tor. It was run by Lysefjorden Adventure. The others in the group were all men in their late 20s to 30s. My wife is mid 60 and I am 68 with two artificial knees. Tor hired me a pair of walking sticks for 50kr and I passed one onto my partner after she found the terrain a little difficult. It was fabulous, Tor was fabulous. Tor made sure the boys never got too far ahead and there were plenty of opportunities for photos. The slog up was certainly worth it! Tor stopped at any awkward bit coming down to ensure we got back safely.
