We are in our mid 60s and exercise but not regularly. It took us four hours r.t. to hike the Preikestolen minus picture taking and having snacks when we got there (10:00 a.m. to 14:20 p.m.). For me it was a moderate difficulty trail although on our return hike it was raining; hence, our descent was more challenging. There are no outhouses along the trail so use the bathroom before you start your hike. Mr. Sander of Thon Hotel Stavanger advised us not to take a tour; rather to take the bus and hike on our own. We booked the Boreal express bus (pink and white) online. It stops at Klubggata across our hotel when we flag it. Please refer to the pictures to gauge whether or not you would hike the Preikestolen. The incline at the very beginning made me huff and puff but the rest were negotiable. There was a long stretch of stairs of rocks amongst other short ones. Where there are clearings, there are short flat parts of the trail with either gravel or boardwalk. Always look for the steel markers (approximately 18-24” in height and 2” in width) with arrows and distance in order to head in the right direction as there are areas where the semi flat boulders are expansive. The distance sort of encourages you when the climb feels tough. The vista of Lysefjord as you approach the last climb and on the Preikestolen itself is magnificent! It is absolutely worth flying to Stavanger and hiking up the mountain!! We heeded the advice of bloggers and had layers of clothes, hiking boots with very good grip and ankle protection, raincoat in case it rains, water, apples, snack bars, dry clothes to change into, and most importantly, our phones for capturing the captivating scenery. The Hiker’s Cafe was still open on 15 September 2023 so we were able to have hot chocolate after our hike.

My wife and I took her parents on this hike which we were led to believe it was 'moderate' rating. Certainly learnt that European hiking trail grading system is harder than Australia. As such, my in-laws had to stop about 3km in to reserve energy to return back down. Personally I loved the hike and think I could do it comfortably < 3hrs return however took us closer to 5 with the oldies. Thankfully no injuries but I'd hate for someone to get injured up there as no easy access back. Great to see the rock in it's natural beauty but slightly concerned that those people choosing to get the Insta-worthy shot sitting with legs hanging off the edge, would hate for the trail to be closed and fenced because of a careless mistake. Assume the flowing water along the trail is drinkable so no need to pack a heap, just refill.

The towering Pulpit Rock is at the end of 4km trail. It is a hike with moderate difficulty that rewards the adventurous tourists with breathtaking views of the Lysefjord and spectacular scenery. Be sure to prepare yourself for the hike, by wearing comfortable shoes and pants (jeans are not recommended) and by bringing water and food for refueling. Also note that weather conditions can change very fast at the top of the mountain, so it is always advisable to bring additional warm and wetproof clothes. For a complete experience, I recommend taking the Preikestolen cruise & hike, which includes a cruise through the Lysefjord and a bus ride to the beginning of the Pulpit Rock trail. Tickets for this experience can be purchased online.

The weather was wet wet wet so we were surprised the hike was ON. Nonetheless it was a beautiful hike made challenging by the strong winds, heavy rain and hail. Thankfully, we were blessed with some brief fjord views when we reached the Pulpit Rock! Our quiet guide and group was caring and looked out for each other.

I went with my frend that also has a trippadvisor his name is jonas dhal so chek him out. i had a grate time and it wase funn hiking because ther is a lot of places you can swim in a cool yourself dow. i wold recomend to go in the summer and that you have good hiking gear like good shoes. when you are on the topp you can get a beutefull weiw of the fjord that is underneth

Hiking to Preikestolen/Pulpit Rock is no small feat. From the car park, the hike follows a well-marked trail for an 8-kilometre (5-mile) round trip. This means it'll take around 4–5 hours total. The hike to Pulpit Rock is classified as a moderate hike. you also gotta get to norway so it would be a cool place to visit in the hollydays

An amazing hike that anyone can do, anytime of the year.. be aware.. the car parking is £££ (250nok around £20) We went in May and got to the carpark around 11am, there were lots and lots of people so I think in Peak Season it will be really busy and take you twice as long, especially waiting for photos at the top. It took us around 55mins to reach Prekistolen but we hoofed it up without any breaks, we also ran all the way back down (trail runners) so it was a nice challenge for us (1hr 27mins in total) but I think for the average person, take 3-4 hours round trip. ANYONE can do this hike, it's literally made for purpose now; The path has changed alot and 99% of it has been created/laid by the wonderful Nepalese which makes the ground sturdy- even in winter hiking is possible as you don't hike on grassy areas that could be boggy. There are a few nice wooden bridges to cross which makes great photo opportunities also. There is alot of steep sections, so take your time and take plenty of water and snacks. Respect the mountain and be courteous to your fellow hikers. We had glorious sunshine but be mindful the weather can change at any point, take a waterproof jacket as well as warm clothing. TOP TIP: continue the hike up from Prekistolen, follow the red Ts up the side of the mountain and here you can not only enjoy a fresh water spring but we feel there were better photo opportunities as you enjoy looking down onto Preikestolen and also into the magnificent fjord. It is a lot quieter too, less people make the hike further up, we took the opportunity to do a bit of exploring and had our lunch with an amazing view!

This place is stunning, there’s a decent walk to the rock which took us about 75 minutes, when you reach the top you are literally on a platform with a 2000ft drop - no barriers. You can see the platform without going onto it although I would recommend visiting the actual platform. You can also get some decent views of the platform by leaving the actual path to the right on the way down. You don’t have to pay for entry - the best views I’ve ever seen.

We were staying in Victoria Hotel, Stavanger. Booked on a Boreal bus, Pulpit Rock Tours, picking us up outside the Radisson Blu hotel. Bus on time, and a smooth ride (through a very long tunnel) to the base car park for the hike. It rained all the time but the route is very clearly marked and stone staircases and walkways/bridges are very well maintained. Route very steep in places, and great views along the way. Once actually on the rock, the views are stunning. Quite a breathtaking experience. Took some stunning photographs.

I was staying with friends who are Norwegian and I'm pretty sure she is part mountain goat! I found this hike doable, but challenging in some areas. I have had knee reconstruction and have a weaker knee/hamstring on one side, but have done other "moderate hikes" in the US National Parks. If you are afraid of heights - make sure you are mentally prepared for this. There are some areas even my mountain goat Norwegian friend called scary. I would suggest hiking poles, mine had been taken by airport security earlier in the year and I hadn't replaced them. Regret that. Overall worth it, but did take longer than the 2-3 hours some had said.
