About
Gladstone is the only complete Victorian pottery factory from the days when coal burning ovens made the world's finest bone china. Traditional skills, original workshops, and the cobbled yard and huge bottle ovens transport visitors back in time. Visit the gift shop and tea room and have a go at throwing a pot, making a bone china flower or decorating pottery. Please allow two to three hours for your visit. The shop and cafe, which serves a selction of drinks and light lunches, are open to non-museum visitors.

Fantastic educational place to visit

So much to see (and do when Covid restrictions are lifted). Very interesting and we spent 2 hours here, looking at exhibits and speaking to knowledgeable staff.

A brilliant day out for everyone.
Aug 2021
What a brilliant day out for all ages. The museum is so interesting and informative with so much to take in we went and had a wonderful lunch in their cafe before resuming our visit. The potter asked if we'd like a demo of the potters wheel in action which we did and we stood there enthralled by his expertise and all the information he was giving us. We watched a lady making china daisy flowers and she told us how she learnt the art in the potteries.

Well worth a visit, you'll learn so much.

Lovely authentic museum
Aug 2021 • Family
We live locally to gladstone pottery museum and even have relatives that actually worked there in the 1800s and early 1900s!
It doesn't feel like a museum, it feels like it's still a working business, particularly because of the staff who demonstrate the crafts of pottery making, flower making and hand painting. So talented.
The bottle kilns are fantastically preserved.
We particularly enjoyed the section about the history of the toilet. It was set up in a really immersive way and my children could really get the feel of how unsanitary the conditions were in the past. We also enjoyed the doctors house and video. A gem in our city

Brilliant Educational Museum
Aug 2021 • Couples
We weren't sure what to expect when we visited today but it was absolutely excellent telling the story of pottery making in the Stoke on Trent area. Guiding us around by reference to numbered buildings ensured that we saw everything. The integrated Social history is important to the display and the staff who were able to demonstrate certain aspects of pottery making were very good in describing what they do. It is fantastic that this site has been saved for future generations to see how hard work was for the working class before the mechanisation and improvements in this industry. We stayed about 2 1/2 hours and would highly recommend a visit.

Enjoyable, informative and safe visit

Excellent museum with friendly knowledgeable staff. The demonstrations were great. We learnt a lot about the history of pottery making. What was also evident was the care and attention given to ensure the environment was Covid safe. Thanks to everyone who was working there on Wed.

Fantastic museum, pottery demonstrations and innovative displays, great value
Jun 2021 • Couples
We visited as a group of four (two adult couples) and really enjoyed our time here. You have to book an entrance time slot ahead of your visit. When you arrive, you are given a map of the site, and make your own way around the different buildings at your own pace. There are a wide range of displays, short films, pottery demonstrations and reconstructions. By the end of our visit, we had all learnt a lot about the pottery making process and it’s impact on the city and it’s people. We were fascinated by the bottle kilns, which you actually get to have a good look at from the inside. There is a small cafe and shop on site too, as well as toilets. Our visit lasted around three hours. For £7.75 per adult, we thought this was great value too. Well worth a visit.

Very skilled workers
Jun 2021 • Solo
This is the best museum I have been to for a long time. What really makes the difference is having the skilled pottery workers there to explain and demonstrate their craft. The lady painting flowers and the lady making flowers were amazing.

I liked how tidy, well maintained and authentic the works were. The sequential numbering system to follow a self guided tour was simple and discrete. It didn’t detract from the historic environment at all. I also thought the written descriptions in each area were pitched at just the right level to get an understanding of the process and to pick up some interesting facts.

If there were any area to improve it might be the cafe which was rather dull and had a limited selection on offer.

Thank you very much for your review. Your kind words about the museum and our talented pottery demonstrators were lovely to read and it was great to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Gladstone. We do appreciate your comments about the cafe and we do have a more limited offer than usual at the moment due to our lower capacity for visitors under the current government guidelines.

GLAD WE WENT TO GLADSTONE
Jul 2021
Gladstone Pottery Museum, what a fantastic way to spend two and half hours which just flew by and this while running under Covid restrictions, which meant all of the hands-on exhibits were unavailable. The live demonstrations given by ex-pottery workers were incredible to watch and the chap throwing on the wheel was just astounding, in fact they all made it look too easy. Free car parking and for less than the price of a movie you’ll be greeted by friendly staff and find out what a “sagger makers bottom knocker” did to earn his keep. Great afternoon out, we will definitely return post Covid to get the full 100% experience.

Interesting and Informative
Jun 2021
We learnt so much from this visit. There are short videos to watch, a museum trail so that you see everything in the right order, short pottery demos and there would have been some hands on workshops except Covid stopped them. You really get a sense of what it was like to live and work in the Potteries. Excellent museum.
