Surrounded by dramatic brick-red cliffs, this complex of churches, chapel and khachkars stands head and shoulders above all other monasteries and churches. It is just mind-blowing beautiful and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I was extremely lucky to visit during a brilliant day, with steel-blue sky, contrasting the splendid monuments against the red and blue. Perfect combination of important history and stunning nature. If you want to see the carved God on the wall of the picture, which is absolutely unique in Armenia, then you should go to the Noravanq monastery. Surrounding is stunning. Churches are extremely beautiful.

I've spent 10 days cavorting all over Armenia, and in my opinion, Noravank is the absolute highlight of iconic attractions. Surrounded by dramatic brick-red cliffs, this complex of churches, chapel and khachkars stands head and shoulders above all other monasteries and churches. It is just mind-blowing beautiful and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I was extremely lucky to visit during a brilliant day, with steel-blue sky, contrasting the splendid monuments against the red and blue. Perfect combination of important history and stunning nature. Allow yourself enough time, don't rush and enjoy !

Out of all the monasteries I’ve seen to date in Armenia, Noravank is by the far the most beautiful. Pictures don’t even do it justice to capture the stunning beauty of the monasterial complex along with the breathtakingly beautiful scenery. Throughout all the different and beautiful monastery complexes in Armenia, Noravank is standing out with its very unique location. It's located in Gnishik canyon, surrounded with an amazing red rocks, which you almost can't find similar in other places in Armenia. It has something like it's own spirit... very different vibe.. especially when you are lucky enough to be there when there is no people (usually it's very busy!). Consider, that July-August is very hot there!! My favorite season is late spring..

Noravank was built 13 centuries ago! The monastery stands majestically in the gorge of the river Arpa, and in the gorge, makes the view even more impressive. The exceptionally magnificent landscape surrounding the two ancient churches and the chapel attracts tourists from all over the world.
Located in the Vayots Dzor region, it’s a lovely ride through Gnishik Canyon to reach Noravank Monastery. This natural setting enhances the beauty of the monastic complex, and it also adds to the sense of seclusion and spiritual contemplation associated with monasteries. Along the driveway, you will see many caves in the canyon.

My family and I visited Noravank yesterday. It's located inside huge, massive cliffs, most of which have big caves ( where 5500 years old leather shoe, oldest found in the world, was discovered ).
You pass the cliffs, and there is Noravank.... a very beautiful monastery from 13th century. The monastery includes a church and a chapel, some tombstones and khachkars, and also a small museum. I would recommend to visit the monastery in the evening, because it's very beautiful under the stars (the stars feel so close and big btw).
Overall I can say thatit was a wonderful experience and Noravank is one of the must sees in Armenia ....

It is situated in Yekhegnadzor region. Not typically can handle lots of tourists as basic amenities are missing like toilets, baby changing rooms.

We stopped here in late July as part of a day trip from Yerevan. The site contains a few different churches and a vestibule, the oldest of which dates back to around 1221. You can easily spend an hour or so touring the different buildings and enjoying the amazing view.
Like many tourist spots, it costs 100 drams to use the reasonably clean toilette facilities.

Stunningly beautiful- drive up the valley (don't take a tour- you'll get no time and huge groups ruin the atmosphere),stopping to take photos of a famous boulder on the way (I never found out WHY it was famous....) untilyou see the monastery appear on a crag in front of you. When we went it was shrouded in cloud, which suddenly parted and the main church was lit up by sunshine- incredible. The whole area looks like it has been designed for a film- how can something be so gorgeous in real life? The main church itself is stunning- climb the (terrifying) stairs up to the top and look at the graffiti by Soviet troops from when the church was used as an arms store by the Russian army, wander round the museum and learn about Armenian art- Khachkars and the natural pigments used in the manuscripts, and sit in the atmospheric chapels watching candles flicker over ancient carvings. Gorgeous.
If you bring boots you can walk in the valley- there is some amazing wildlife.
Food- only really the cave house at the bottom of the valley- make sure you have small change as it is stupidly cheap. The cake the woman makes is lovely, and the tea is good even though the teapot and so on look a bit makeshift.

My legs are not really strong. I don't like climbing staircase. I feel my knees a little bit painful after climbing up /down staircase continuously for 10 minutes. Is it suitable for me to go to Noravank Monastery?
A visitor before said that there are snakes and lots of loose rocks. Is it safe for me to go there ?

Most of the road will be covered by a car. You need to walk about 2 mins to reach the church. The road is very lovely and it's a must see place. Go for it!!
