Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My journey to Elmina as well as Cape Coast Castles in Ghana was, as most African American/Caribbean visitors say "a spiritual awakening" My heart was at first saddened to hear of the atrocities that my people endured on their journey to these "Forts", until their final journey through "The Door of No Return". By the end of the tour, my heart rejoiced, for in spite of the fact that it took some 500 years and many generations, I did return to that same door. I know that made my ancestors happy in knowing that they are and never will be forgotten. The Tour Guide was excellent in presenting the historical facts of the Slave Trade, which took approximately one hour and a half. I would recommend you wear comfortable shoes, sneakers or sandals. A camera/camcorder is a must. Do not forget to bring your bottled water as well. ELMINA AND CAPE COAST CASTLES ARE A MUST SEE.

Cape Coast, Elmina and Dixcove are all accessible forts built by colonial traders. What started as lucrative business in gold and produce shipping became human trafficing in the slave trade. The "castles" emphasise the slave trade because of its collosal impact on the development of West Africa but the museums show the full range of activity that went on. Dixcove is interesting for being ragged and not as polished as the more popular Cape Coast and Elmina. Give enough time to visit the museums. Take a tour at one and explore the others on your own.

I participated in this tour in 2007 with a group of friends. We departed Accra around 5AM on out journey to Elmina, Cape Coast and Kumasi. We had an awesome driver, guide, negotiator, protector and friend during our visit. Unfortunatly he has since passed away at the age of 29.
No one had any idea of what to expect. We knew there was more too what is presented in literature. I don't believe anyone can capture the emotion that fills your heart as you move through the castle. We all felt the slave's presence lying on our skin.
The smell of history consumed everyone, and we all departed with tears flowing from our eyes and pride of those before us. It was such an eye opener of what these wonderful folks endured for no choice of their own.
As we left the castle, I looked back at folks leaving and just as us their eyes were filled with tears. It is a must tour for anyone who travels to Ghana. The long ride is well worth the time.
We did an overnight trip that included a day in Kumasi. Great shopping in Kumasi. The average cost of most items is less expensive than Accra.
Will be returning the fall of 2013, I cannot wait be there again.

The huge Volta dam makes up a large part of Ghana. But a bus ride through the lush green landscape is great. Along the border with Togo are even up to 1000m high mountains.
Starting in Hohoe there is a small cottage information for tourists, where you can obtain the information. The situation is very favorable: the Wli waterfall is located just a walk from there and the area is ideal, with its magnificent views of forest and mountains to hike. The Wli Waterfall is the highest waterfall in Ghana and for that reason alone worth a visit. Most get there with a guide, the tip should be negotiated beforehand.
On the Queen Yapei there are two areas: according to guide the first class that you can secure only if it is early in the morning at the ticket counter (which also does not open reliably at the specified time). The second class consists of a common room with beds, but this is a fallacy: there are no real beds, only wooden benches, which are also occupied immediately. Who is tough, should spend a night on deck. Also up there as quickly as possible, one should secure a place to sleep. If you heart is in pain, stumbling over a night wandering about it. Hot meal and breakfast can be ordered on deck, but that there is pure water available for human consumption. Be sure to buy drinking water before.
All in all a great adventure!

Visiting the castles (or slave dungeons) is akin to a pilgrimage for any African American. I better understand the history of the slave trade, intellectually and viscerally. The guides were immensely informative. I walked on sacred ground as the guide took me in and out of holding pens for male and female enslaved africans. I saw the door of no return and imaged large wooden planks leading to huge British, Portuguese and Dutch ships.. The waves battered the walls of the fortresses and winds whipped around above through small ventilatin portals. It was overwhelming powerful and the stench in the dungeons was suffocating. That I am a descendant of these courageous african people fills me with pride and dignity.

The Forts and Castles along Ghana coast are lasting proof and evidence of the Europe’s interest in attaining gold, ivory and African Slaves from the continent. Ghana remain the highest country with the largest number of these structures in West Africa, 26, in all, and more than 50% still in existence. On this tour, we explored the Forts and Castle in Ghana (Central Region, Eastern Region and Greater Accra Region)

There are many places to enjoy the huge Volta river. Aim for the Volta region. Aim for Akosombo to see the river and the Dam. Lots of street food if you are feeling brave. Little pockets of fish which you can buy and persuade your host to cook for you! The river is huge here and beautiful. Drive on to Ho for a real authentic Volta town, of further and cross the border into Togo. Make sure you have picked up a visa in Accra for Togo. Easier than doing it at the chaotic border.
