Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We have been coming here for 15 years and the atmosphere has deteriorated badly. Just too many people walking on the coral and destroying it. Far too many tourists on this beach. The locals that rent the snorkelling equipment and beach chairs have become quite aggressive and loud. It really has lost its charm, which is a sad thing. These days even the dive instructors take their clientele walking across the coral.
The Vienna Beach Resort restaurant at one end of the beach looks much nicer but the food is relatively expensive and worse than average. The waiters and waitresses are friendly but it’s lost it’s original warm ambience.

Vienna Beach Resort is the place to park yourself. Their restaurant overlooks the black sand beach. Sun loungers and snorkel gear can be rented from locals in front of the resort. The çoral garden'is located not far from the beach. Nice place to chill out.

Stayed at the Coral View Villas (check my review here at Tripadvisor). The place is one among a few others placed almost at the beach at Lipah Bay. Choose either one for staying with great sunrise view and easy snorkelling access.
The reviews of Lipah Bay are a bit mixed. I stayed in Lipah Bay for a week and snorkeled at least 10 times at the reef so I know it pretty well. My guess is that the bad reviews are froim people snorkeling the inner reef where corals are dead and the water shallow and not very clear.
Get in the water from the middle of the bay where there is sand bottom and swim to either of the sides. Swim to the outer part of the reefs - near the edge of the bay where the bottom drops to 10+ meters depth. At 3-5 meters depth the corals and fish are great and the water clear. We saw a lot of live corals and a lot of fish. We also had it almost to our selves as it is a bit further out than most snorkelers go. But it was reachable in about 10 minutes of swimming - also to our youngest one at 7 years old).
(I have snorkelled around the globe (Red Sea, Hawaii, Great Barrier Reef, Fiji, Gilis, etc) so I can compare with confidence. Lipah Bay is not the best I've ever seen, but it is really nice and the access is so easy. And in my opinion it is more exciteing to explore the outer reef than the nearby Jemeluk Bay.)

Lipah Beach is now the most beautiful and definitely cleanest bay in all of Amed.

Every Sunday up to 63 children are on their way to keep the beach, main roads and side streets of Lipah clean. They collect everything that negligent guests and locals leave behind in plastic. The effect is visible from far away. Lipah presents itself from its most beautiful side! It's fun to have a good time on the beach again. Many thanks to the children and the initiator of the cleaning actions, I Wayan Sutha!

This was my favourite snorkelling beach, BUT it has really deteriorated. A combination of non-thinking Europeans walking on the coral and possibly global warming have ruined what was pristine coral. The locals who hire out the snorkelling gear are too reluctant to tell tourists not to walk on the fragile coral. People just stomp on it, especially at low tide. My heart bleeds. As with most of Bali, no supervision. Tourism has a price.

Excellent snorkeling right off the beach. Head to the right side of the beach. I believe the area is referred to as the Coral Gardens. There really are some beautiful corals and a good variety of fish. The giant clams are wild. Got beach chairs, used the pool, and had an excellent snapper lunch at a small resort to the left on the beach.

+We snorkeled here and the visibility was a bit better than what we experienced at Jemeluk Bay.

+ Rented snorkel for 50k rp pp, including fins from some reggae bar/restaurant

+ Visibility is dependent on the weather, so check that first and ask the locals if you are unsure about snorkeling conditions

+ buoys indicate hotspots but remain vigilant about your whereabouts as the current can be strong

+ beach is not as rocky as Jemeluk bay and there are not as many fishing boats everywhere

+ weren't harassed by vendors

+ left our belongings on the beach under the watchful eye of the Reggae bar/restaurant owner

- a bit hard to find the beach so ask the locals where it is or use your phone for navigation

- check your snorkeling gear thoroughly before entering the water so that you don't have to exit and change it and then enter again

- the coral starts very close to shore so entering requires some good navigation to get to deeper water without having to rest on the coral which is a huge no-no.....just don't panic and let the waves carry you.

- lots of dead, bleached patches of coral but it gets prettier the deeper it gets. Lastly, watch out for triggerfish...they are territorial and will nip and chase you if you get too close.

OVERALL:

Nice beach with a good view and a good snorkel to pass the time. The black sand is definitely a winner for me as it is so unconventional.

We stayed in Coral View Villas and had snorkelling at our door step on Lipah Beach. Few other great snorkelling spots in the same area as well, which is a shorter away. Saw a great variety of fish and even a sea turtle at dusk!

I came here at the suggestion of my hotel.
Easy to get to, the driver pulled right up.
Umbrella and chair rental is 50k. The people working there were very friendly, did not bother me. When I came back the next they all greeted me by name.
I thought the best spot was to the left of the black buoy. Healthy, colorful coral and a ton of fish.
Restaurant on site was decent. Beers were about 30k for small/45k large. Try the Arak with lime w/honey. Just 1 will do it.
Be careful if swimming near the shoreline. I could see a lot of broken glass and ceramics when I swam back. There is construction near by but the noise wasn't that bad.
The black sand heats up so bring flip flops or water shoes.

we were really disappointed by Lippah Beach. The sealife and corals are not spectacular. Most corals are dead, rubbish ( condom, noodle pacaging, etc ) swimming into your face during snorkeling. On the beach there are some annoying guys trying to rent you the sunchair. If you dont take one you get stupid comments. There are much better beaches in Bali and more friendly people. I was completely missing the Balineese friendliness there. All the people have in focus there is your money.
