Newark Castle and Gardens...

Entry to the castle grounds is free of charge.

Newark Castle and Gardens are lovely, formal gardens bordered by the remaining walls of Newark Castle which was partly destroyed in 1646 at the end of the English Civil War. The Castle has stood proudly on the banks of the River Trent for nearly 900 years.

History of the Castle includes the death of King John, Knights Templar and as well as the English Civil War, War of the Roses, Anarchy Wars and Baronnial Wars.

Guided tours of the Castle are conducted by the Castle Ranger every week. The tours normally run on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Surfaced pathways in the castle and gardens allow suitable access for wheelchairs. During the visit, relax in the quiet garden areas and admire the picturesque views. Entertainment often occurs seasonally, with a bandstand for concerts available, and makes for a great day out.

Newark Castle and Gardens offer nearby parking, so it is easily accessible by car. It is also close to historic market places; Southwell market and Newark market, so why not visit the pretty market towns too.

Spent a very pleasant couple of hours here. The dungeon tour is very interesting, the guides are very knowledgable and make the tour fun. Well worth a visit. I found it by accident, Couldn't find any signs to the castle from the market place.

Today we brought one of our young people to see Newark castle, all week we have been talking to him about the dungeon tour which he was really looking forward to. The previous night I had phoned up the ticket place where we got told we could pay on the door at the castle, when we arrived at Newark Castle... More

The people of Newark are fortunate to have this open space so readily accessible, so convenient to river, market square and Riverside car parks. Heritage setting is often used as photographic backdrop for wedding pictures with couples using adjacent registry office. Super model of town is at the corner entrance.

Not a lot to say about it's not worth going out off your way to see it looks good from the river but as you walk around to the front all it is a very large and old wall.

Thank you for your review. Newark Castle and Gardens are free to enter. During the year we also do events including re-enactments, funfairs, arts and crafts, brass band concerts and more which are completely free to participate. Visited the castle, after living in Newark for 2 years. It was ok, in fairness it will not entertain kids for long

Very interesting ruins with a surprising history. In need of restoration. There are plans for a new roof with money from the Heritage Fund. One of the best gatehouses in the country. They hold re-enactments of the Civil War in the grounds ( see their Facebook page.)

Lovely castle ruins, situated next to the river Trent. Kids had a great time running around and rolling down the bank! Flowers were all out under the trees - beautiful.

Not much left after being damaged and dismantled at the end of the Civil War but imposing view from the other side of the river and nice gardens to walk in on the town side. A few more information boards would be good to bring the place to life.

We visited on a cold and rainy afternoon but it was well worth it. The grounds are very attractive. Interesting remains of the castle nestling on the riverbank with several information boards, we were particulasly interested to find that this is where King John died.
