The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Darlinghurst
Home of the small bar revolution in Sydney, Darlinghurst has more bars per capita than any other suburb. Themes range from American whiskey bars and 1950’s theme bars to hidden bars requiring secret passwords. Oxford Street is the "Gay Capital" of Australia, where gay and lesbian-friendly venues feature “diva shows” and dancing until the morning. Vintage lovers flock to Crown Street, and small designer boutiques can be found along Victoria and Bourke Streets. Dining in Darlinghurst is a gastronomic adventure. Food from all over the world is on the menu, from American ribs to tapas, sushi to gelato and every ethnicity in between.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a fantastic time here during happy hour - great vibes, lovely staff and super cheap drinks. Drag entertainment was an added bonus

The police on the door.! At 56 years old am not used to being denied entry because I’ve had 4 drinks in 6 hours…no wonder Oxford Street is finished!

I have been coming for years and have always had a great night. Tuesday was karaoke night and surprisingly the talent was really good with only a couple that should never have got on the stage. The bar staff can be a little rude sometimes but then so can the clientele to them. The music is fab and the atmosphere is fun. You have to wear enclosed shoes to get in. Oxford street would not be the same without Stonewall.

I was racially discriminated by a security guard and he told me he did not like me. When I approached other guards for assistance they didn’t want to hear about it and the first guard then ejected me from the venue. I was shocked that someone can be kicked out based solely on their accent and skin colour. They thought I was an easy victim because I did not look like a local and was on my own. After the incident, I tried to work formally with the management but they denied any racist behaviour at the venue by simply claiming that they are inclusive. They clearly don’t care. It does not matter what their website says, I felt unsafe and vulnerable because of my skin colour and did not find the venue inclusive.
The more I talk to friends about it, the more I hear similar stories about discriminatory behaviour at the venue. Such a shame that these abhorrent experiences are still happening in a city like Sydney. I’d rather go to other welcome places like Palms, Columbians and many other on the street.

Was enjoying a relaxed evening catchup with some long time friends who I have not seen in a few years. We were seated at a table quietly minding our own business. I went outside for a vape and when I tried to re enter the rude security said no I cannot and that I should leave and take my female friend who was still inside with me. When asked why I was being refused entry I received no answer. Shame on you stonewall for employing under educated rent a cops with no idea how to provide customer service and have no idea what they are doing. Disgusting. Went to another venue down the road and had a much better time. Avoid this dump at all cost and don't waste your time.

We visited the Stonewall Hotel on a busy Saturday Night.
We managed to find two chairs at the bar, which helped to keep the drinks flowing.

There was three Drag performers on stage, which provided a great atmosphere. We also got talking to a few of the locals who gave us some of advice of things to whilst we were in Sydney.

We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our nights here so much that we decided to visit again the following Monday.

Very disappointed with your door staff this evening. I’ve come from the uk with my partner and got in fine with our friends, me and my partner had been outside a couple of times for a smoke, but the last time, I came back in before her and when she tried to get back in, they refused and then wouldn’t come in to let us know, even when my partner pleaded, and despite us being there all evening, leaving a woman on the street on her own! Your posters say ‘together we shine’ but your door staff clearly didn’t get that message, like going back to the 80’s. Really poor experience from a place we’d looked forward to visiting. They may be the reason the bar was half empty. We won’t be back, so sad from a venue that promotes inclusivity.

This venue is habitually policed by aggressive bouncers. They regularly decide on a whim whether or not they wish to grant customers entry and will gaslight unsuccessful patrons into thinking they have had “too much to drink”, often becoming abusive when asked for the reasons behind their refusal. Queer people seek out queer spaces to feel safe - this establishment is policed by bullies whose behaviour is cruel and often triggering. I doubt any of the security staff understand what being a good ally is, or even what the word “ally” means. Spend your money at genuinely queer-friendly spaces like Palms on Oxford Street, the Bearded Tit in Redfern or The Imperial in Erskineville. The irony that this place is named after the most famous uprising against homophobic police brutality in the gay rights movement is not lost on me.

Last night I was forcibly dragged out of the toilets mid pee by a male security guard. I was dragged down the stairs and kicked out and none of the security wanted to tell me the reason why they were kicking me out. When I brought up the situation on Instagram I was promptly blocked.
