This river meanders around through the city, and is an asset for the city. Views from the city's many City Cats are simply beautiful and changing, with views ranging from the many high-rise buildings in the city area, to vast grasslands, to the South Bank area, then into the suburbs. Certainly worth a trip to see just a glimpse of some of these highlights.

The Brisbane River is its greatest asset - and probably has been since it provided a home and food source for the local indigenous tribes.
It has played a key role in the development of the city and Queensland and remains an active port taking very large container vessels and cruise ships.
Beyond that traditional, maritime, role it provides a key transport route for city residents and visitors alike, speeding catamarans carry you from bank to bank and along the twisting length of the waterway.
In that way it unites South Bank culture and leisure with North Bank offices and shops, university with docks, and visitors with locals.

You can walk (or bike, or scooter or run...) for miles and miles up and down the river on both sides. Great facilities (toilets, water fountains, playgrounds, exercise areas) and you are by the water. It is not the prettiest river (brown!!) but is well used by boats and ferries so there is always something to see. Taking a ride on a ferry is fun too and you get a different perspective of the the city.

We really enjoyed the river cruise on our friend's boat a night before New Year's Eve. Beautiful pictures of the cityscape and the wider area of Brisbane. Brisbane's visitor can choose from a few private companies that run up and down the river, some of which offer cruises with meals (lunch or dinner) or just drinks. Even with the public boat transfer, City Cat or City Hooper (with no cost) every tourist can easily have a satisfactory view of the river and the city. You can see from the river some of Brisbane's main attractions. Nice sunsets and illuminated nights. Many restaurants, bars and nightclubs are by the river.

Great cycling and walking facilities along the river. It took me 45 mins to walk the 3km from Auchenflower to Southbank. Well used and safe. Lotsa young joggers and cyclists Water available along the way and city cat stops. Well signposted for exits to Roma St parklands, Wesley Hospital etc. Great initiative.

We enjoyed walks along the promenade on Southbank and also walks along the City Botanical Gardens pathway and then New Farm, nice areas to view the river and some of the parks and infrastructure adjacent the riverbanks. We agreed that the best experience is on the river, either by City Cat, City Hopper or a River Cruise with commentary. Fascinating history, the river explored by Lieut. John Oxley in 1823 when capturing escaped convicts from the Sydney colony and named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales. Plenty to interest on the riverbanks with merchant buildings dating to the early 1900's and the more modern structures of housing, apartments and high rise office blocks. For a more static view we enjoyed a stroll across the Goodwill Bridge with multiple pauses to see the traffic on the river. The river levels from the 2011 floods are highlighted in various places, and the replacements pontoons and walkways and the stories behind them are interesting.

Brisbane is not an especially interesting or attractive city, and one is forced to seek out attractions that are probably not all that interesting.

In the vain, the Brisbane River is not very long or scenic, however it does give the city a nice focal point and provides some nice places for strolls. There is also a free ferry service running a few kilometres along it, which makes for a nice diversion.

Cruised upper and lower parts of the river and we were surprised at the extent of settlement along the banks. Excellent viewing all along the river, out to the port area and back down to the outer residential reaches and of course under the Storey bridge and through the city CBD. Comfortable ride and inexpensive for our 90 minutes touring.

Easy to hop on and off CityCat transport ferry using GoCard. Great alternative to buses to see around city. Lots of eating options in city along Riverside and can use bikes or scooters too. Might be better if more car parking available near ferry stops as with all public transport in Brisbane. Park 'n Ride areas always seem full and often need to access CityCat from further than desired.
