Located in North Hobart, the State is a local independent cinema that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for over 100 years. In addition to eight cinema screens, we also have a boutique bookstore, cafe bar and rooftop cinema. Our cinema is licensed, so you can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying a movie!

My husband and I only infrequently go out to the movies but if we do, the State Theatre is our first choice. It is friendly, little theatres round every corner, you can take your drink into the theatre whether wine or coffee, there's an excellent...More

Fabulous cinema showing films for all tastes, not just the latest releases. Comfortable seating, delicious coffee and wine by the glass make this a truly enjoyable experience.

The state is a great place to go and watch a movie, it is much quieter for those without children as it is a slightly older crowd. That said, it can get very busy, so during weekends it is good to book. You can take...More

The state gives a bit of cache to a night at the films in Hobart. Great coffee that you can take into the cinema (or a glass of Tassie wine) and intimate seating in large comfortable chairs. The food in the attached restaurant is also...More

Arthouse films as well as features. Up to date technology with a variety of smaller cinemas. Great cafe on site and very close to the well known North Hobart restaurant district. Day and night sessions to cater for all.
