The building is very beautiful, but there are also interesting exhibitions you can visit for free. At the time I was there, there was one about radio broadcasting and one about Victoria. If you want to know more about the bulidng or one of the exhibitions, there are several free tours with highly enthusiastic guides available.

First of all, this is one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. It has a massive building in the CBD of Melbourne, which includes a big dome covering a huge reading room. The library offers excellent working conditions, and there are always plenty of students and others sitting at the desks in the reading rooms. Free wifi is... More

Most folks think of libraries as boring and where you need to whisper at best. Not here, though. The building itself both outside but especially inside is a revelation. There are exhibitions on all floors which depict works of artists from the past and an insight into the history of both Melbourne and Victoria. It won't let you down. It... More

If you walk by you should step in and check out the cool architecture. They also have an art exhibit you can visit for free.

Huge place with lots of books and history. There are numerous levels with different attractions. I can't remember what they have at each level but do try checking this place out.

We spent about 90 minutes touring the very elaborate rotunda-styled building. The 6th floor had the best view of the overall structure and busy students and others quietly working below. The 5th floor had several exhibits worth viewing, especially that of the infamous Ned Kelly, along with his suit of armor. This building is free to walk in and you... More

It's right opposite Melbourne Central and is super easy to get to. Give yourself a couple of hours to visit and learn a little about the local culture and history. I enjoyed the architecture and the heritage exhibition.

This is more a museum to visit and learn about the history of Melbourne and the history of books than a typical library. The views of the main reading room are excellent.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
