St Paul's Anglican Cathedral is a beautiful, historic building, situated in the centre of the City of Melbourne, Australia. It is a place of worship and prayer. St Paul's is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836. Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul's Parish Church. Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral. The decision to build on the site of the existing church was made because of its proximity to the railway and soon to be completed cable tramway service. The Swanston Street and Flinders Street corner remains one of Melbourne's busiest intersections today, ensuring the Cathedral is a place at the heart of city life.

Situated just across Flinders Street Station. A must see Cathedral. Beautiful ornate architecture. Very serene inside even though it is situated right at the corner of the busy intersection.

A great old church. This church could be found in any great city in Europe. Beautiful stained glass window. Notice the pillows for kneeling. This was an oddity. The sell tours.

Beautiful cathedral and an icon of Melbourne CBD, together with the famous Flinders Train station diagonally opposite. Good to visit or even take a leisure walk by the streets, admiring the architecture and beauty.

If you check the old paintings at the Ian Potter Centre across the road, you can see the Cathederal as one of the original buildings of Melbourne among pastures and old smaller buildings. Classic Melbourne architecture

Allowed to take photos inside the cathedral by purchasing a camera permit for $15.00, in the gift shop. It's a beautiful place to see and spend some time sitting in one of the pews. Melbourne Visitors Shuttle has a pick up/drop off point right in front of the cathedral.

We took some photos outside this beautiful Victorian architectural piece without realizing it was the St Paul Cathedral. We was surprised to find a cathedral right in the middle of CBD as we strolled along finder st. Melbourne still has many beautiful Victorian era buildings which are a sight to behold! A must see if you happened to get down... More

I certainly had no plans to see this, but it was on Swatson Street. I was on my way to a restaurant so I stopped by to take a look. Having seen cathedrals in Rome, this wasn't a must see for me. However, if you're on Swatson Street and Flinders Street, you mind as well grab a photo.

Lovely building from the outside, and stunning within. Even if you are not religious you should pop in and have a look at how lovely this architecture is.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighbourhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
