Description:

The Broome Historical Society speaks through photographs, subject albums...

The Broome Historical Society speaks through photographs, subject albums and visual displays at the Museum to provide visitors with an understanding of Broome from its rough and ready early days to its emergence as a world centre for cultured pearling. Broome was the first truly multicultural district in Australia; Aboriginal, Japanese, Chinese and Europeans have all contributed to Broome's very diverse cultural history and the Museum, in its exhibits and its albums reflects this richness. Visitors will learn about Pearling and Luggers, Exploitation and Exploration, Adventures, Hardships and Mateship, Asian and Europeans; Riots, Shipwrecks and Missing Diamonds; and Japanese attack on Broome in World War II.

Love it!

You haven't seen Broome if you haven't seen the museum, it gives you the history of the city and pearl diving. I enjoyed the video on the telephone exchange girls.

So sad that it was closed but we still took a walk around the building and there were some photo "collages" on the outer walls that we could peer through the bars to look at. Wish we could have gone inside but it was still worth a stop to look at.

A small museum run by volunteers, but a wealth of information. I was fascinated by the displays including the history of the diving in the area and some exhibits on the war. The exhibit on how the Japanese put their stamp on all other currencies was amazing.

Extremely good value! Bigger and better than I expected. Pearling and WW2 are strong themes. Other collections are on display too, well worth the entry fee. Great staff, friendly and cheerful. Great location with view of he bay out the back. Am very glad I went along.

The young guide knew her history of the industry very well, and presented in manner that held our interest, did not like the taste of pearl meat though, an acquired taste I would imagine.

I am not big on museums but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. There was a great video playing where the ladies interviewed used to run the Broome switch board. It was very interesting, informative and entertaining. I also enjoyed the abundance of information of the pearling industry in Broome.

Mainly pearling history and some WWII bombing info. Well presented and informative. $6 adult entry. Nearby buildings also part of the museum, didn't visit them but includes large shell collection. Could spend 1-2 hrs here although I suspect kids would only manage 1hr tops!
