If you want to experience a pure, tranquil New Zealand hike, do the Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk! It is a comparably easy hike doable in three or four days. There is only one relatively difficult and long climb and descend, the majority is flat and gentle easy walk in amazing old forest that changes colours and plants around each corner.... More

This was my first great walk in NZ (in a group of 7) and first self guided camping carrying a full backpack (previous hikes was with a porter). It was fairly physically tiring on mainly the 1st day but there was ample time for rest and the views along the way to the summit, Panekire Bluff were totally worth it.... More

Beautiful scenery, well signposted, well-maintained facilities. The first part up to Panekire Hut is strenuous - and it was a hot day when we did it - so bring a hat and top up your water. Stunning views over the lake are your reward. The next day is mostly downhill - lots of steps! Don't do what I did and... More

46km - one of the 9 Great Walks in NZ. Stunning, mystical scenery. Medium to hard walk so good level of fitness. Completed over 4 days and 3 nights. Huts are basic but comfortable. Take your own cooking facilities. Well worth the journey....

We visited over new years to do the Great Walk after having done the routeburn. Very busy I do not recommend in peak times as most of the huts have very limited space for people and luggage. Track itself in good nick though and wonderful views. I felt it was less great walk more back country with a higher price... More

Hmmmm. Very interesting. While we had a good walk, the weather was really horrible - wet, cold, foggy. So not only was everything we owned completely sodden after the first day, there were absolutely no views AT ALL to compensate! Waking through the forest in day 1 to panekire is quite special - a really spooky forest. But the rain... More

This was an amazing trip. It was fabulous beyond words. I wish i could describe it a beautifully as it is. But then i would be a famous ghost writer!! It is way out of the way, but worth the trip. We travelled with our daughter so did a guided tour. It was worth every penny. It rained for 2... More

Beautiful place and reasonably easy walk, very relaxing and soothing. Did it for about 3 or 4 days last year, and if have time will go back again. Definitely worth a visit. Watch out though, although good to have a swim in the lake but the water can be very cold. And one of the best look out there is... More

The Whatapu Bay Track (5 minutes to the lake) provides ideal access to lake Waikaremoana. A short, easy walk down an incline takes you to a pristine, secluded lakeside beach, with golden sand and crystal-clear waters. It's the perfect place for a picnic at any time of year, and ideal for a refreshing swim in warmer months. Note that there... More

One of the most beautiful places in the world that is tucked away in the country of New Zealand. It's lush green forests down to the lakes edge and a fantastic walking trail that suits medium to high fitness levels. It's got cabins and Huts a kitchen in the camping ground with a shop that sells the basics for your... More
