The Auckland Art Gallery is a free gallery (although some special exhibitions are ticketed). The building itself is beautiful - in fact it won Building of the Year awhile ago (an international success). I joined a free tour on the Hilights - the volunteer guide, Chris, was very interesting and informative - he was able to explain a lot of... More

I will never forget this collection of Maori portraits lovingly done by Gottfried Lindauer who not only gave detailed dignity to the chiefs but also a historical snapshot of a mighty people. When the portraits were compared to photos, it is clear he enhanced the tired looking faces. We unfortunately did not have time for other exhibits or the famed... More

Great for a rainy summers day. Such great variety of art in the numerous exhibitions, even the building is a work of art itself and lovely atmosphere exploring it. Really enjoyed the exhibition of Lindauer's Maori portraits. Worth visiting before it's finished soon!

I went for the gallery's international collection but did not have the artists that I read that it had ie gaugin cezanne however some good pieces in that collection. Also has a number of other exhibitions there including contemporary and rotating exhibitions (the latter which can cost). Book tours in advance as can fill up. Cafe gets very busy. I... More

We especially liked the Maori portraits gallery. Reading all the descriptions was quite interesting and educational. We spent about thirty minutes, but could have stayed longer (it closes quite early).

A lovely (and free) museum. The absolute hit for us was the Maori Portrait exhibit which had two descendants of one of the portraits giving a talk and a number of videos on how the artists did the portraits - really interesting! As with any art museum there was art we really liked and art that didn't appeal to us.... More

My wife and I stopped by randomly while walking through Albert Park. The museum was free to enter, clean, modern, and had some interesting pieces on display. It makes for a nice stop while walking through the city, though make sure you pack lightly since they request that all backpacks be removed and/or held.

As veterans of museums the world over, I was surprised by this museum's confusing layout. That said, it's a beautiful building with views of Albert Park from some levels. Viewing the Lindauer exhibition was a unique opportunity, with background information clearly written by each painting. The supporting movie was interesting, though unless you're in the front row you can't read... More
