Coming from someone who isn't exactly into art, this was still a great experience. Enjoyed the Maori portraits. Saw the paid exhibit also. You could certainly let time get away from you there!

The Auckland Art Gallery is one of those places that I return to again and again. It's centrally located, taking up a corner of Albert Park, and across the road from the Central Library. My most recent visit was during the school holidays. I took...More
Dropped by the Auckland Art Gallery to see the special exhibit of nudes from the Tate Gallery in London and see what else the museum had on exhibit. It's a bit pricy at $23, but the exhibits are well laid out and there is ample...More
Really a great surprise walking distance in the city. Staff are friendly and the space and works are very thoughtful and considered. A big highlight is the Maori portrait room. enjoy

Free to visit and worth the hour or two you will spend wandering around. The building itself is worth a visit as its really beautiful. The cafe was small, and a bit funky smelling....suggest you get your coffee elsewhere.
A great gallery with a good cafe and smaller exhibitions, varied artwork, they have a Picasso and a Monet on show, amazing NZ art work of Maori ancestors. Worth a visit.
