We were escorted around the island by motutapu staff, showing us how the island has restored. The nursery where seedlings are raised, which are then planted around the island, mostly done by volunteers. The outdoor education centre, catering for various groups, especially schools. Little known and seldom visited, Motutapu Island is across the causeway from Rangitoto and closer to the city than Waiheke. Maintained by the Department of Conservation it includes a working farm, beaches, WW2 history. The highlight however is that it is one of Auckland's "Treasure...More

Like stepping back in time to a place that is becoming again as the islands in the gulf were for previous generations. Exciting to hear and see different birds, in particular saddlebacks.

pod? Homestead Bay is the designated camping area with facilities. Sheltered & safe. A good base camp.
