Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

The food market here is good, but everything else is too expensive. I got the feeling that many are waiting for rich Chinese to pay over the odds for things that are half the price online. Great town though, shops outside the market have more reasonable prices.

A really stunning village, close to wonderful vineyards and beautiful beaches. It even has a lovely cinema, great farmers market (on Sun am) & pretty shops. The cycle trail would be ideal but for two points: (a) gravel used is far too big so even experienced cyclists on mountain bikes will be uncomfortable; (b) gradients which would be ok given... More

We visited recently and boy was it crowded. We arrived at the market around 9.30am. The market itself was an amazing experience - young and old. From arts and crafts to unique retro/antique pieces to fresh produce - they have it there. One advice - go early. On our way back at around 1130am, the congestion heading towards Matakana was... Matakana is a lovely village north of Auckland. It has a high concentration of craftspeople, artists and artisans. Many of these clever, creative people are food producers. Consequently, the Matakana market is without peer and well worth a visit.

Every Sunday morning there is an AMAZING 'bring and buy' market held in a larger undercover wooden-trestled marketplace square with food, coffee, and ice cream stalls included. A very extensive range of high quality wooden and fabricated artwork goods are available to freely browse and buy . . HIGHLY recommended as an enjoyable couple of hours if you are in... More

Had a lovely time here, I enjoyed tasting the different dips. You dont get these dips in the shops so thats what makes this market so unique. Different types of foods, and a great atmosphere!

While staying at nearby Snell's Beach we visited the Matakana Village, and being averse to crowds, deliberately chose not to go on market day, which is Saturday mornings from 8am to 1pm. The village is less than an hour's drive from Auckland, so good for a countryside visit during the week not just on market day. The shops include gift... More

Matakana Village Market on a Saturday morning is a fantastic morning's entertainment. It is a thriving, buzzing, village with lots of 'farmer's type' stalls of local produce, art and craft work and great little food stalls (whitebait fritters, yum!!! ) We go often just to enjoy the scene, the crowd, and the locality.
