Matakana Village and Matakana Farmers Market, one hour from Auckland. Close enough to visit, far enough to stay. On Saturday the vibrant farmers market is a focal point for the community and its growers to meet. Produce fills the stalls - fruit and vegetables, delicious home-baking and Italian-style sausages, divine organic chocolate, fine wines and boutique olive oils, locally-brewed beer, cafes and live music. Matakana is a unique mix. Rainbow Valley Farm is a world-famous model for permaculture. You'll find a riverside gallery next to the new cinemas, the best in contemporary literature just over the road from teahouse or cafe.

Lovely day out - good food, markets, arts and craft. Lots of organic food choice. Also has a movie theatre and lovely restaurants to choose from, should you not wish to eat at the market.

Gorgeous market, with fantastic local produce. Quite small but genuinely local and no tacky rubbish. No dogs allowed in the market, but a couple of girls will mind the dog for a gold coin donation. Just lovely. Set down amongst other beautiful shops in the village.

Matakana is a lovely little village that is relaxing and fun to visit. It has old and more modern buildings with plenty of places to eat and drink. There are boutique shops, a cinema, several restaurants/cafes and weekend markets. We spent time browsing the shops before we visited many of the wineries for wine tasting on our way back to... Matakana is a beautiful little village that combines vintage and modern. It has a lot to offer with its beautiful little boutiques, cinema, restaurants and Saturday farmers market and Sunday vintage market! It is definitely a must see on the weekends, you won't be disappointed. There are heaps to do in the region too!

Nice relaxing place, spend a morning there and then go onto Goat Island about 30 min drive away. The whole of this area is nice. About 1.30 hours from Auckland, traffic can be bad getting there at weekends.

Love the markets here on the weekend. Plenty of choices dining-wise great little pub also a good place to settle in and watch an All Black game in my experience and is the gateway to some of our best beaches and wineries

Drove up from Auckland on a Saturday when the village market was going on . Lots of fun, some nice stalls where we bought some souvenirs, a good bluegrass band for entertainment and nice food stalls for a quick bite. Even dog sitters to watch your pet while you were in the village. Highly recommend if you are in the... More

Drove up here from Auckland which is less than an hour. Took the coast road rather than the Toll Road and got a good look at the coastal towns. Market is a bit smaller than we expected but still worth the trip.Nice area around the town with some vineyards .
