Description:

See the highlights of Hawke's Bay aboard the award winning Hawke's Bay...

See the highlights of Hawke's Bay aboard the award winning Hawke's Bay Express, a delightful and truly unique sightseeing train that travels on road.

Hop aboard the family built and run Hawkes Bay Express and begin your journey through one of the most attractive cities in New Zealand or take a sightseeing tour of the region. Your modern road train is styled like an old-fashioned steam train and inside you'll find a romantic, old-time atmosphere. Sit back, relax and watch vibrant Napier come alive through the train's large opening windows.

The Hawke's Bay Express city tour guides you through the coach restricted city centre. Then takes you over Napier's beautiful Bluff Hill, where the early settlers lived and the old port village of Ahuriri and the inland lagoon. The in-depth commentary covers the regions history, 1931 earthquake, the cities rebuild, economy, industries and lifestyle with personal stories of life from the 5th generation Hawke's Bay owners.

If you have a large group book a private sightseeing tour around the region or even a beer appreciation tour to 3 venues. The options are endless.

See you on board!

Make it this one. We were greeted by our host for the tour who introduced himself as Will, he was extremely welcoming, personable, and seemed genuinely interested and after chatting to him about where we were from, our plans etc, he informed us it might just be smaller group on the tour this morning. He invited us to board his... More

Great fun and very informative tour of the Art Deco buildings of the area. Will and his wife are wonderful hosts and share an ongoing commentary on the history of the area. The "train on tires" is beautifully done and very comfortable. The length of the tour is just right and leaves enough time to walk around the downtown and... More

This three car train can carry 16 passengers per car. It is on rubber tires and the engine travels the roads and streets. It stops often for viewing the sights of this Art Deco town. The driver and his wife are perfect hosts and town cheerleaders. This is a safe, non-risky ride. You will enjoy the comfortable, different transport and... More

Well done to Will and the team from the Hawkes Bay Express. The effort and detail that has gone in to this outfit is truly amazing. This is a Napier must do. I would highly recommend putting this tour on the top of your bucket list of activities whilst visiting the beautiful Hawkes Bay. Will's commentary was very informative and... More

This informative tour of Napier was made interesting and entertaining by the Hawkes Bay Express driver/guide. Nice views of Art Deco 1930's style buildings, rebuilt after the 1931 devastating Earthquake can be enjoyed from the road train!!

We had to book this as a shore excursion because of the times it is offered. I guess part of that cost covers being picked up right next to the ship and taken back if you want to go straight back after the tour. We booked the 9.45 tour which meant that we could have a later start but it... More

We saw the HBE in town and decided to go and find out when and where and details from information centre. We booked, and absolutely enjoyed the most informative commentary from Will, the driver/owner who had the best personality and answered all our questions. We would recommend this hour and a half journey through and around the town of Napier... More

The tour was just the right length, visited all the most interesting places in Napier, and the driver/guide, who was also the owner, gave out just the right amount of info - not too much, not too little - and delivered with a nice touch of humour too. Highly recommended.

Napier is a unique and lovely city to visit and the Hawke's Bay Express is a great way to hear the history and see the area. The train met us as we disembarked from our cruise ship, and the father and son operators were very welcoming and we traveled comfortably throughout the city.

Booked this on line before going to NZ. Well worth doing this trip round Napier. Our guide (whose family had actually built this lovely land train) was really knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his home area and managed to impart a lot of information about Napier and the Art Deco in a fun way. There was plenty of time for photos too.
