Well I thought this was going to be another boring bike trail. Boy was I wrong! Starting from the Napier CBD we cycled 31km along the 4m wide bike trail along the foreshore, through the dunes, then the wetlands past Clive, then inland though the orchards to finish at Havelock North.

Throughout every 2-3km there are explanation boards about the discovery and settlement of the area. And the development of the horticultural industries.

At the 8km mark the Waitangi Park on the foreshore presents an excellent demonstration of astro navigation for transiting the Pacific Ocean as used by the early Polynesian explorers.

If you time this ride right, you can use the Havelock-Napier bus to either start or finish your journey back to the start, about a 40min bus trip. And they all have bike carriers on them. Although it will cost you at $2pp ;).

Over 200 km off road pathways around napier and Hastings and havelock north. But lots stupid gates. If you not like gateS please complain to councils. They do not keep out motorbikes. Only people can keep out motorbikes. And many paths have no gates so why have any gates.
Ask locals for best places to go. Many more things that are not on the maps or website.
If you like a guide please contact me direct and I will take you places you did not know existed..

Well worth doing, this is the third time we have visited just to do the trails, so 6 days riding all together, every day we got lost, yes there are sign posts, yes there is a map, yes there is an app. All of which are like they got them 75% there, then ran out of money. Lack of consistency in signage wording / destination place. Maps hopeless if your lost or unsure. Track itself is good, but the boxed in swing gates are tight, especially if your on an ebike. Posts with route / track colour and arrows or track / route colour lined on hard surface tracks, follow the orange line and your never gonna get lost. But alas no lines or marker posts

Thoroughly enjoyed a full day of cycling round the Hawkes Bay area. Started along the coastal path, then followed the river past orchards and farm land to Silk Chocolate Factory. After a delicious iced chocolate we got back on the bikes and cycled out to Puketapu, stopping at The Puketapu Pub for lunch (the Kiwi Burger was excellent!) and Church Road Winery later in the day to sample some local favourites. The last leg of our ride took us through the wetlands, where we joined back up with the coastal path.

Many of the cycle paths were flat and well maintained. We did the 36km wineries loop and the river ride and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and tranquility of the river. We had been assured that the paths were clearly sign posted, but there were times when we were unsure where to go - so make sure to take a clear map for checking.

WE stayed in a campground in Westshore in our RV, and went out for walks and bike rides during the day. The Hawkes Bay bike trails are fabulous, such an asset to Napier and a great variety to close from. Trails around town or the countryside is great for visitors and popular with the locals. Napier has wonderful walks and bike rides throughout the area, you could spend days here, and that's what we did!
such a beautiful area, highly recommend a visit.

To be honest, I cycle these paths whenever the sun is out and the wind isn't up. These are just perfect for some time out. The paths are clear of the road and well maintained. They get better views than the roads so are much more of an attraction than driving around Hawkes Bay. And for locals what a great way to do something fun and free. The Big Easy which is on at Easter Weekend makes great use of these tracks if your looking for an event to enjoy them.

Great concrete pathway and limestone trails, so you don't have to go on the road very often. These are flat and great and easy to ride. We loved going to the Puketapu Pub, with the added bonus of a cold beer and lunch to keep us going on the return journey.

I cycled over 140k over a weekend and only about 3k was on the road! When I did need to cross a bridge, it was on a clip on so away from cars. Trails are fantastic, but get a good map as they are not as well marked as they could be. I took my road bike which was fine, many trails around the country seem to be built for mountain bikes but a road bike would be just fine on these. Loved the puketapu ride, great place to eat brunch once you get out there. But it gets busy so go early!
Pick your route and make sure you have a map, but any fitness level can do these rides. And be fine with kids, no cars and really flat. All sorts of people were doing the rides- all ages and all sizes. If you are thinking about a family holiday, or getting into biking or like me just fed up with cars....This would be a great place to go.
