- JamiSeattle, Washington21 contributionsWish we budgeted more timeWe only saw the first part of the walking trail, but it was amazing! Frying pan lake is huge and the wind stirring the steam coming off of it is mesmerizing Give yourself a good three hours to enjoy the whole walking trail. You walk down into the valley and a bus can bring you back up. But the bus runs every 50-60 minutes.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 October 2023
- SmoltmanCourtenay, Canada10,627 contributionsLots to see and a boat ride as wellYou start your walk on designated trails and end up at a lake where you can board a small boat for a 45 minute tour of the lake. After the boat tour a bus takes you back to the entrance. Along the way you see many small ponds, mini geysers, boiling mud pools and lots of rock formations. It was here in 1886 that a major eruption occurred with a considerable loss of life.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2023
- Amy WSeattle, Washington253 contributionsEnjoyable outingThe hike is easy... All downhill or flat. There's a lot to see between the start and bus stop 1. There's not as much to see further along but it's still a lovely walk and worth it. The boat cruise is interesting but probably not worth doing on its own.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023
- thaisfunciaSao Paulo, SP338 contributionsIncredible parkJust loved the thermal parks on Rotorua! We took a tour to do both parks at the same morning and was a great option. Slow and not rushed. The park is nice and well organized. You have trails to follow and even a bus system to take you back to the main entrance because would be an uphill journey! Not to be missed.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 January 2024
- miniman2804251 contributionsA beautiful, awe inspiring and extraordinary volcanic valleyIf I could give this 6 stars I would. I was just so, so thrilled to see this amazing natural wonder. Only 140 years ago the lush, verdant valley was bare, and blasted with ash and mud from the volcanic eruption, which also enlarged the lake. The trip is an easy 3.5 km walk down the valley (you can do some steep climbing on a side trail, but the trees seemed too high to afford a decent view) past steaming lakes, hot springs with their mineral mediated colourful crystals, then a delightful boat ride on the lake. It looks like Wales which was shaped by the same natural processes 450 million year ago - not recently enough for the result to be captured on camera!Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 February 2024

We were booked to go to White Island, but after the eruption we decided to visit Waimangu and we weren't disappointed. It was fascinating and very educational. We started walking in lush, but new, vegetation and a view of the Emerald Pool (which was more dark green than emerald!). Continuing on to the Frying Pan Lake the story of this region and its people began to come to life. The beautiful blue crater lake was stunning and was followed by a walk through an incredible landscape of hot pools, colourful streams and small geysers. The marble terrace was like a moonscape and Warbrick Terrace, with its view up towards Tarawera mountain and chasm, was breathtaking. The final stretch is completely different, through the old lake floor nature trail with lots of bird life to spot. We ended our walk at the spectacular Lake Rotomahana. We hopped on the bus back, which was on time and well organised. We had a fabulous day out but it took us longer than the approximate times we were given ... maybe because we stopped to fully take in what we were seeing. It is not to be rushed!

We totally loved this experience!! The re-opening special price makes it a bargain, but even full price it would be worth every cent. The walk was our favourite part, especially as we were there early and got to experience these amazing sites with no-one else around. The scenery is so dramatic and nature at its wildest. I took hundreds of photos as each time I looked there was something new to see.
The walk was an easy one, mostly downhill with some steps up to the inferno lake (do not skip this!!). Throughout the walk there are benches which you can rest on if required. Plus there is a bus you can hop on if needed. Just amazing!! Highly recommended it to all!!

This valley is located approximately 20 mins drive south of Rotorua. It is well worth the trip out. The valley offers so much for people of all ages and abilities.
For those with limited mobility there is a bus ride with stops along the way down to the lake. For those more mobile the walks down to the lake are amazing.
There is an easy walking single path. There are steps in some spots but not many and they generally help to get to where you need to go. The walk is self directed but the guides they provide are easy to follow and provide excellent explanations of the viewing points.
The craters, geothermal activities, water colours are just incredible. We took out time with the walk. As I recall it is approx 2.8km but we allowed ourselves a good 2.5 hours to walk this to allow us to stop and take photos.
If you are less mobile the first part fo there walk is just great so if you can manage that and get to the first bus stop you can then take the bus from there but still take in most of the best crater experiences.
The boat ride out over the lake provided some good explanations and we got to see one of the geysers spouting which was very cool.
A couple of things. Take some insect repellant. Not an issue generally through the experience but there are a couple of spots where sand flies are around, and also there are lots down by the boat dock and on the boat. Also make sure you apply sunscreen.
This was one of the highlights of our north island trip and I would thoroughly recommend you consider it. The staff were friendly and the cafe/shop at the top provides some drinks/coffee/food as well.
There are a couple of toilet stops along the way and there are some picnic tables as well so you can take a lunch and enjoy this when heading down/up the valley.
Allow a good 3 to 4 hours for this trip

We called here on our way down to Napier.
It’s a brilliant way to see the geothermal activity in this area, a steady walk down about 3 miles through the steaming pools and fissures, the frying pan lake, towards the main crater lake at the bottom and the boat trip around the inside of the crater.
We can do a lesser walk, or even a buss straight to the lake, all are good, and up to your level of fitness, or weather you want to skip the sweaty walk altogether, and just do the boat ride.
It’s a good 3/4 trip, less if you want to skip the walk, well worth a visit.

This was my second visit to the Volcanic Valley, but this time I added on the boat trip on Lake Rotomahana. I enjoyed the fascinating environment just as much as the first time, the odd sounds of the funaroles and hot springs gurgling away, and the spectacular primeval colours - the eerie whisps of steam rising from odd shaped vents in the ground, Then the intense blue of the Inferno Crater Lake was stunning. The handout guide explains the numbered points very well, and the sign boards add extra information. I'm very impressed that there are 3 stages of walking, which is mostly downhill, but if 1.5km to the first bus stop is enough walking, then the bus takes you back to the visitors centre. The same to bus stop 2, and other 1.3kms. Then right to the end of the walk a total of 4.6kms and bus stop 3, and the 45 minutes boat ride on Lake Rotomahama. You could walk back if you wanted to, all uphill, but the bus makes it so easy. This is a great attraction and extremely well organised.

We arrived when they opened at 8:30 and seemed to be nearly the only ones in the park. Most of our guided hike was downhill. Our park ranger, Daniel, provided us with history about the area and pointed out native flora and fauna along the walk. We stopped at many scenic vistas that looked down into the valley and the steaming Frying Pan lake. Once we were past Frying Pan lake, we walked past several interesting geysers, fumaroles, hot springs, and Inferno Crater. Our guide then drove us to down to the lake where we enjoyed a narrated boat tour around the lake. Near the bathrooms we saw beautifully colored pools and terraces. While on the lake, we saw many black swans, steaming cliffs, and a geyser which were all very interesting. A bus then brought us back uphill to where we began our day.

Ever seen a lake so hot it was steaming. I have now! See hot water bubbling out of the ground, steaming hot lakes and steam rising from well, everywhere. It’s a long walk to see it all, but there is a bus that picks you up from the end to take you back up. Also bus stops along the tracks where you can be collected if you don’t want to walk further :)

We visited on a very hot day so be prepared with loads of sunscreen and water. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is a cafe at the start where you can buy food and drink, note it closes at 4.30 pm if you are planning an ice cream for the End of your walk.
We did just get walk, would have lived to do more however had my handicapped sister with me who struggled on the walk and the heat, and with limited toilets .
Walk starts out quite steep with gravel however about 1 hour in you get to see Crater lake which is an incredible bright blue which is a MUST see! You need to climb approximately 40 steps to see so not easy if you have a pram.
There are free shuttle buses between certain points however you can not see anything from the buses, just from the walk and you need to be reasonable fit or stable on your feet as it is a gravel walkway.
I would like to go back and do the boat ride at some stage.
See picture of lake - stunning !

We had a great walk down to the lake with the kids. They loved looking at all the steam and reading the history of the area. They also spent a lot of time throwing stones into the water and feeling the steam coming off some of the rocks on the pathways. Too much time clearly as even with 1.5hrs allocated for the walk we missed the boat on the lake by about 15mins.
If your kids are easily distracted by the world around them leave at least and hour 45 to 2hrs for the walk down or better still get the bus to the boat and then walk back.
Still we were outside exploring and the kids had a fun day.

Is Te Puia similar sights to Waimangu? If we only have time to see one, recommendations
Written 26 January 2017
Different, so it's like comparing apples and oranges.
Te Puia is more commercial, and the geyser when it goes off is quite satisfying. They also have the cultural displays, the kiwi house, and a very good shop with locally made arts & craft items.
Waimangu was a more natural setting, with less crowds, and the boat trip on the lake (extra) was a different perspective on how the volcanoes create the landscape. Their mud pools were quite active while we were there.
If you are short of time and won't have an opportunity to see Kiwi or take in a cultural experience elsewhere, Te Puia will give you a more time effective experience.
We were glad we did both.

There are several thermal sites near Rotorua like Waiotapu, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, The craters of the moon, Orakei Korako thermal park etc. I just wanna do one and which is the best among all these?
Written 15 December 2016
I love Waimangu. Atmospheric with wonderful history and bird life. Really calming and scenic. Great cafe at the top as well and the bus is very handy. Make sure you get the boat tour included in the ticket price. The commentary and images are amazing of what has happened in the area.
Written 15 December 2016
We only have time to do either Wai-O-Tapu or Waimangu. For those who have done both which would you recommend. We are a family with children aged 7,9 and 11.
Written 26 October 2015
Definitely, without question, do Waimangu over Wai-O-Tapu!! There is no comparison, I think. The kids are old enough to keep up with the walking and will find it much more interesting. Plus, you can go at your own pace and there a plenty of places to stop and rest. I think the kids (and you) won't be disappointed if you choose Waimangu over Wai-O-Tapu. Enjoy!
Written 27 October 2015
Need to find out if this park is suitable for an elderly couple who have difficulty walking long distances, particularly rough uphill tracks.
Written 27 December 2014
I would not suggest this particular place for seeing the volcanic colours etc...perhaps the more gentle walk at Waka along the far end of Fenton Street on the pre boarded walkways would be more suitable, it is more commercialised but just as great to visit.
