You will find it about 20 minutes south of Rotorua, just round the corner after the Murupara turn off. There is adequate car parking, watch out for the road shingle as the contractors do use it as a storage area. Standard D.O.C.long drop toilet to use before the approx 3 hour round trip. The short walk to the Crater Lake is for everyone and can be done in good walking shoes in summer, in winter you will come across a couple of muddy patches. For those with a good level of fitness you can then take the track to the top. It is classified as advanced and after rain the track has significant ruts, tramping boots are essential, a walking stick useful. In a number of places it was easier to walk up the deep ruts as the sides were quite slippery. We noticed a number of slip marks suggesting that previous walkers had slipped while trying to get around these deep ruts. Courtesy is required as in a number of places the track is only single file. Once at the top the views are spectacular on a fine day, lakes, mountains and the Ureweras to the east. It can get breezy up there, conditions different from the bottom, so have warm clothing available. Well worth the effort.

I am a moderately fit 73 year old and managed this walk in a little over an hour going up and slightly faster on the downward track. It is about 25 minute car ride from the city centre. The parking is by SH5 and situated nearby is a toilet which is a clean and adequate log drop. The bush going up is attractive but no bird sound on the day we climbed up. There is a crater lake and geothermal activity to view on the way. We have had heavy rain in Rotorua over the last few months so for the last third of the climb, the path was deeply rutted(about a metre deep in some places) and I was glad I had a sturdy stick to help me navigate without slipping. Once at the top there are 360 degree views as far as the snow-covered mountains of the central plateau. You can also see Lakes Tarawera, Rotoma and Rerewhakaaitu. Best to choose a sunny day to day to make the climb worthwhile!

The view of the top of Rainbow Mountain is amazing, you can even see the Tongariro crossing in the distance! The track-info states 1h30 one-way, however, we did the return in 2h05 without us being “experienced” hikers.

Conclusion: A steep but relative short walk with a beautiful view from the top of the mountain.

The walk itself was mainly through trees where you can't see much, and at times you felt very isolated & far away from the rest of the world. We didn't see a single person on the way up or down. However, the taxing climb was worth it - the panoramic views from the top were absolutely amazing! While we were there, we were also able to go into the fire watching hut at the top. We talked to a fire watcher there for almost an hour before heading back down. Great if you like off the beaten path type experiences.

Great views after a very enjoyable climb through bush with interesting geothermal features. Well worth the effort especially as Kerosene Creek hot pools are just around the corner for relief !!

Lovely view from the top of mountains.
Feeling of peace and internal holiness comes while watching the beautiful rocks and pools as the sun shines over them

A pleasant short walk to rainbow mountain via the crater lake walk off SH 5 near rotorua. Just 15 minutes to the viewing point. A little hard to find as there aren't many big signs. The view is quite nice, though there is no resemblance of any rainbow. Would suggest popping by if you have absolutely nothing to do in between or have time to kill. If not it is a missable place as there are loads of other great things to do in Rotorua.

This is an interesting hike up Rainbow Mountain. Crater lake (500m from carpark) is unique. From there the trail goes to the summit for great views. We went on a grey day and still enjoyed it with the bright red soils and steam. It is a good winter hike as it is north facing and the uphill hiking keeps you warm.
Overall very good and we will do it again to do the full loop to Furnace Creek.

The walk to the crater lake is little more than a 10 min stroll. Thete is some minor bubbling and stream but it's a small lake and not very impressive to what you can see elsewhere. Much better to stretch your legs further and climb to the summit which takes around 50 mins to 1 hour. It's a gradual incline on a well formed, straightforward track to start but it does get steeper and you will work up a good sweat.

The 360 degree views from the top are excellent and you can see the countryside and various lakes in the Rotorua area. There is parking at the start of the walk.

This mountain has great views over the Mighty Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Taking around an hour to reach the summit, it’s a pleasant walk through the bush. Head down to Kerosene Creek for a dip in the natural hot pools after the climb for a truly relaxing experience.
