Experience the beautifully restored garden and Chapman-Taylor home. Sculpted from a hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, this is a premier landscaped garden. Sense the prestige, lifestyle and stories of the property's original developer, the prominent businessman Sir Russell Matthews, and his family. Enjoy a game of tennis, make use of the free barbeque on the River Flat, find a quite spot to read a book or just appreciate the beauty of Tupare. Owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council on behalf of the people of the region. Enjoy it - it's yours.

Sensational garden to visit, it was just a pity we didn't have more time to wander around. We'll return in the spring and look through the house as well

We very much enjoyed wandering around the gardens, with steep rustic tracks leading down to the river flats and paved footpaths winding through the "rooms" of the property. If you have the chance to tour the house itself, take it! It is only open on...More

Thanks for your review. Yes, the house tours are well worthwhile. They're on from the start of October until the end of March at 11 am on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Hope you are able to come again and join in with one.

Kudos to the Taranaki Regional Council for maintaining this beautiful park consisting of a 1930s Craftsman-style home and gardens, and having it open free to the public. Despite the fact that we saw it in March (autumn) it was still a lovely place in which...More

Amazing gardens only a short car ride from central New Plymouth. Entry is free. Amazing gardens originally founded in 1932. Very well done with areas showcasing the history of the buildings and the garden house. Lovely colour coded walks through the garden, which can suit...More

A nice park both in the summer and winter. There is both the flower part, but the thing I like about this garden is that it has a nice river and bush walk.

We loved our visit to this beautiful old house and carefully planned gardens. Extremely well maintained. Wish we could have seen inside the house - next time maybe! House tours are only once a day at 11am Fri-Mon.

Thanks for your review. Yes, unfortunately we do have to limit the times that the house tours are available. You have the times correct but also they are only from the start of October until the end of March.
