As a tourist attraction the Craters of the Moon Thermal Area has no lights, massage parlours or cheap tricks. At $8 NZD it's either going to be lame or educational & gladly its the latter. This geothermal attraction features smoking craters & steam vents of sulfur seeping thru the Earth's crust so if this doesnt mildly amaze your kids then... More

this place was well priced and right near huka falls. you see a lot of thermal vents and mud pools. the view at the top of the whole area is very comprehensive. you will not see thermal pools or springs here. just the vents and the mud, but that was pretty cool and the place was way cheaper than the... Craters of the moon had such an amazing nature. The walk took around 45 minutes and costs 8 dollar. Really loved this park, the geometric activity is really special.

This walk takes 45 minutes - one hour. You walk on gravel paths or wooden raised pathways. You can see and hear the bubbling of the mud pots and hissing as the steam escapes. A nice way to break up the drive from Hobbiton to Napier.

The Craters of the Moon are very unlike the moon at all. It is all pretty much the same, I would have preferred to spend 15 minutes there instead of the approx. 45 it takes to complete. Luckily, it is reasonably priced. And we saw a rainbow while there, so that was a plus.

Small place but worth the trip if you don't know anything about volcanic activity: lots of signs and displays, facts and explanations about what's happening under and over ground in the area, including plants and animals living around volcanic activity.

A good day out and easy to reach. If you visit NZ you need to understand at least some of its geology and learn how the nation is still a work in progress in terms of its construction. This place helps that understanding. Just hope it doesn't rumble whilst you are there.

We took a group of youngsters through here, they loved the walking paths and the steam etc that would appear. The paths are so well looked after. They all thought it was amazing and came away thinkign different to what they went with. Really great

Large thermal park. Lots of steam coming from the ground and the big holes. Also some bubbling mud can be seen. It is a steep climb up lots of steps to the lookout but that detour is optional. Otherwise the paths are fairly flat. Quite a large area, took us a couple of hours to walk around on the paths... More
