This takes a little bit of a walk from the car park, but its not too intense. A bit uphill. Worth doing, especially if you like the hobbit, but I think it would be better to time it for when they release the dam. We...More

Seeing how much time it takes from opening the spill gates to the flow reaching the bottom of the Rapids makes you appreciate both the volume and power of the water.

The spills were operating today, amazing to see the water build from nothing to become a roaring torrent in such a short time.

Luckily we checked with an I site in Taupo before heading out to the falls. the power station running the gates are no longer opening them due to an extended dry period. Make sure to check with the local information centre before heading out.

It is a wonder New Zealand doesn't float away with that much clean and frothy water going down the river per hour. You have to visit, make that stop in fact stay at Napier it is beautiful
