Mr 52 and I caught the ferry from Queen's Wharf over to Matiu / Somes Island on a beautiful, calm, sunny Wellington day. It cost me $23. Mr 52 went for free since he's a Gold Card holder. The trip took about 20 minutes on a catamaran. When we arrived, there was a DoC ranger waiting. About 30 of us... More

On an amazing glorious Sunday like Wellington has rarely granted us this year but only Wellington can do like ... there truly is no place on earth quite like Wellington , NZ on a glorious day... a friend and I got the ferry from Wellington Waterfront and spent an amazing time wandering the tracks and trails of Matiu Somes Island... An excellent destination for a 2-3 hour walk, with outstanding views of the inner harbour from a different perspective. Interesting little highlights to look at along the way, including the old animal quarantine station, history of the wartime interns that were held on the island, and an 'up close and personal' weta motel. Easy access via the regular ferry run.... More

This trip from Wellington waterfront by boat takes half a day and is well worth it; the island has an interesting past as a prison camp for WW2 internees and as a quarantine station. They have managed to rid the island of pets, allowing native birds to thrive. The walks are easy and you can do short ones or circle... More

Well worth a day trip - take your lunch! The ranger meets you on arrival and gets you to do a bag inspection for unwanted predators. The history of this island is wonderful, such a varied past. It is possible to stay overnight in the Forest & Bird house (bookings available). The tracks take you right around the island with... More

Love history and wildlife? Jump on the boat and get a guided tour of Matiu. There were only two of us and we had a wonderful time. Easy walk around the island with great views. We actually saw a tuatara sunning itself on the path in front of us. Stood and watched it for ages. Very cool. Guild was informative... More

Matiu is a great place to go! Full of history and amazing views of Wellington. I went on a sunny day and we saw over 30 lizards and several birds! The staff on the island were friendly and overall it was really enjoyable.

Getting there - round way ticket $23 purchased at the Queens Wharf. Ferry ride was smooth, took about 20min. Getting around - some parts may be a bit steep but the track is well made paved road most of the time so easy walking. Be sure to have enough sunblock/sunglasses. Bring your own water and food and a bag to... More
