Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nice for a stroll along the beach or roadside. A good spot to watch the surfers (the brave ones who can cope with the cold and winds that often visit Lyall bay).
Call at Mauranui surf cafe club for a warm or some food.

This was an interesting part of the city to visit during winter. The crashing waves were mesmerising from the car and we took a plethora of photos. We also enjoyed our bracing walk to the dairy on the foreshore, The Wellington air was certainly fresh.

There are very few places you can take a dog to a beach in the summer, but Lyall Bay has a dedicated section of the beach

Lyall bay beach is a popular wellington surf beach opposite wellingtons international airport Wellington. Surf not very big as it is protected from a direct southerly swell. Surfers complain and it is common knowledge with the locals as the signs say, "not safe to swim after heavy rain or rain for 48 plus hours" as it is for most Wellingtons beach's In summer it has been recorded re the sewage over flow from Wellington's sewage system, not only could you smell it but you could taste. Plus toilet paper and solids are regularly found on the beaches. A web site that shows when beaches are safe to swim. Google is it safe to swim wellington, new Zealand. It is recommended for swimmers to use the public swimming pools if you value your health. It is a NZ regional government NZ government monitored service. Not always accurate.
Tummy, gastroenteritis, IBS Health Risks.
Storm water in our rivers, streams seas and ocean waters brings with it amounts of waste from animals and large quantities of untreated human sewage from overflows. This is a significant health risk after heavy rain. Only swim when the water is clear. This is hard to tell sometimes as the water is never clear compared to Mediterranean and tropical island waters. Wait for 48 to 72 hours after rain.

Very popular with the surfers. Lyall Bay is right next to Wellington airport. You are allowed dogs there so also very popular for walking dogs there. Toilets are close by. While your there stop in at the fish n chip shop across the road and enjoy a paua fritter, they are awesome! Have fun!

Beautiful spot for a swim on a nice day. A couple of great cafes around too. Would suggest either going by car or being prepared to walk as they are a little spread out along the bay.

Headed for a visit early evening during the week. Caught the sunshine and had a lovely walk along the beach. Enjoyed watching the world go by and watching all the planes take off and land. Worth wandering along to see the 'middle of middle earth' sign. Seems a good spot to walk your dogs. Just chill out for a while :-). You can top up your snapper just off the main road.

Lyall Bay beach attracts a lot of surfers and is a nice place to walk along the beach and watch the action. There are plenty of cafes in this area too and free parking along the road. Sunrise & sunset at Lyall Bay can be particularly spectacular too.
