- Tony WCambridge, United Kingdom446 contributionsSpectacular ViewsWe arrived by bus from the Bus Interchange, which meant there was a bit of a queue to get on the Gondola car. But that's a minor thing, because once at the top there are hours of entertainment. The hiking trails around the top station are sometimes quite steep & exposed, so you need proper shoes, and windproof clothing. But the views are spectacular. There is a decent cafe, and the inevitable souvenir shop.Thank you for taking the time to review the Gondola, we are pleased you enjoyed your visit :)Written 2 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 December 2023
- Jay BSooke, Canada331 contributionsGreat photo opportunityI took this side trip from Christchurch. From the tram station, you will need to get there. The # 8 bus takes you there, or you can get a tour bus that leaves on the hour, the latter being more expensive. If you buy a Tram / gondola combo, it's cheaper. Good ride up - well worth the pictures, seen below.Thank you for taking the time to review the Gondola and we are pleased you enjoyed your visit:)Written 2 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 28 December 2023

There are many walks around this place too and the trampers would love doing those walks. The scenery is stunning from the top. There is a café at the top incase you feel hungry/thirsty. There is a small restaurant at the top but didn't stay as it was very busy. Very nice gift shop at top as well. Not really worth the travel time unless you plan to eat at the top or hike around.Thank you for taking the time to review the Gondola :)Written 20 January 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 10 January 2024
- 896ashleigh5 contributionsChristchurch on top.We arrived soon after opening and were able to purchase tickets easily and quickly. The gondola ride itself was a huge hit with our one year old who enjoyed spying the ocean, sheep and other gondolas. Us adults loved the view at the top of the mountain, particularly the sparkling blue water on the Lyttelton side. The cafe/restaurant at the top had plenty of options and the staff were able to assist with our allergen questions. The staff were also friendly and accommodating. We suggest arriving early. When we got to the bottom at approximately 11am, the line was snaked out the door with buses of people continuing to arrive regularly.Thank you for taking the time to review the Gondola and we are pleased you had a lovely time :)Written 15 February 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 February 2024

We are staying in Christchurch for a few days so wanted to cram as much in as possible including spending a few hours here. We visited their other attraction yesterday the tram that takes you around the city showing you places of interest etc. The cable car up to the top was magnificent with breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The staff were amazing too both at the kiosk and on the cable car. We would walked a couple of the paths too which gave us even more views of the surrounding area.Thank you for the fantastic review! The cafe and visitors centre is cool with a short visitor experience in the ground floor. Bit of a wait but cute ride.. We walked back down one of the steep trails to Lyttleton had a beer and caught No 8 bus back to car park.. very nice way to spend afternoon. One annoyance was lack of signage and directions on trails from visitor center.Thank you for reviewing the Gondola, we are pleased you enjoyed the Discovery Ride and your visit :)Written 27 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 21 April 2024

Disappointed that the shuttle was not included or offered as a part of the combo.
Also, as we arrived at the Gondola at 2.30, we were warned that there were only 2 returning shuttles, more people on the hill than returning seats and we might not have a return seat. We were advised that we could catch a City bus, but our return ticket for the shuttle would be of no value. There were many people upset that they had been sold a return ticket without being given this information.
If my friend was not local (familiar with the City bus, and with family to pick us up if need be) we would have rushed to finish the attraction to ensure a return ride.
As it turned out, we took our time and the last, 4.30 shuttle was not full. But a lot of stressed passengers on arrival for nothing.
Other than that, a lovely ride up and back.

Cruise ships should monitor the conditions and substitute another activity and the gondola should close down on days when you cannot see a thing from the summit. We paid quite a bit to walk around a large gift shop, have an expensive soft drink in the restaurant, and look through windows that we couldn't see out of at all. Would highly recommend cruisers consider visibility before booking this.

We bought the Christchurch Pass and the back of the shuttle tickets says there are shuttles leaving the gondola at 11:05, 12:35, 13:35. So we went back down the hill on the gondola at 12:15 thinking we were making good time. Turned out the departure times had changed and the shuttles now leave the gondola at 12:00 and then 13:30, so we ended up waiting more than an hour for the shuttle. If the schedule has changed, so should the damn tickets. They don't even have to print new tickets if they don't want to. They can just print stickers with the correct times to put on the tickets or at the very least have the staff point it out when the tickets were purchased. Instead evidently they just thought 'oh no biggie they can just wait'.

The weather was amazing that day, and we went the week after the school holidays so it was nice and quiet. The views from the top are amazing and the gift shop has lots of neat stuff. There's a cafe too but we didn't buy any food.
There was a 7 minute cart ride at the building about Canterbury history, I don't think it was meant to be comical but we found it funny, especially the horrible pronunciation of Maori words (we're from Whangarei with a higher Maori population).
The gondola ride itself was great, not too long and not too short. Definitely worth going if you're new to Christchurch.

Like everything else it seems, the Gondola doesn't open until 10:00am. It takes about 40 minutes by bus number 28 in the city and costs $2:00 a person! We could not get over it. The public transport is very cheap all over NZ. The bus stops right out side the entrance so there is no way you'll miss it! The buses run once an hour from downtown, but check the timetable. The gondola itself is fun and the view from the top is great. The explanation boards are very clear and show you what you are looking it. The café was fabulous and had a good range of offerings. The big surprise was their gift shop! It had the best and cheapest range of souvenirs (which we discovered on our subsequent trips around NZ) Given it's location in a closed touristic environment, we expected higher priced too but no. At $4:00 per person return to Christchurch, it was a bargain. You can also buy combination passes for different attractions there. Don't forget to bring and seniors and student/ concession cards as these seem to be accepted also ~ perhaps it was the grey hair, but I was given seniors rates almost everywhere without asking, and only once asked to show a seniors card. It saves a lot of money on entry fees.

Despite the long distance from the city, the Gondola gives you a great view from the Heathcote Valley.
The shop at the top is relatively expensier, compared to similar shops but the view is spectacular. It is worth the travel, money and time

Good to be back at the gondola today to celebrate the reopening on such a beautiful day.
We've been Annual Pass holders for some years and love the peace and beauty of the gondola come rain or shine. In fact, being up in the cloud and rain is sometimes more peaceful than on bright sunny days! The cable itself can hold some surprises as we have seen a kingfisher and an owl (in the middle of the day) sitting on it as we have travelled down.
The views are always different and there are a number of walks easily accessed from the top. The cafe is a convenient stop to have food and drink and we have always enjoyed what they have on offer.

The day when we went was very foggy, nothing we can see at all. I think the gondola company should take care of the customer, which they can offer the customer come back on the next day for free. Because the main purpose going up the hill is for the good viewing of the Christchurch city, which we got none. Also we had a bad experience with the customer service at the time tunnel, the staff attitude was very rough. We don’t expected it will happened at the tourism area, very disappointed.

Thanks for the feedback, on weather affected days we have signs located at the base station and we try our best to advise all customers that the views at the summit are limited or non existent. This gives people the opportunity to come back on another day if they choose not to visit, I am sorry if this was not advised to you.
Could you please email me in regards to the bad experience you received in the Time Tunnel, as this is not something that we would expect from our staff and something I would like to investigate further.
My email address is gondola@christchurchattractions.nz
Thanks again for taking the time to provide us with your feedback, I look forward to you contacting me.
Kind regards, Mark

We bought this ticket as part of a combo with the tram and a few $ discount, there would've been more if we had added in the Botanical Gardens. We paid the $10 each for the shuttle bus, it isn't free. It was a very pleasant 20 mins or so ride up to the gondola drop off , it pretty much runs hourly. We went up on the cable car gondola, very enjoyed the trip, it was breezy but ok at this point. The viewing platform has very informative information boards.
The cafe is ok, quite expensive for what it is but a reasonable selection.
There is a shop on the middle floor which has a wide selection of different sorts of gifts.
It was very windy at the top, so not really conducive to long walks but views were great. There are several large information boards giving information on Scott before his Antarctic as Lyttleton was the last refueling stop before this trip.
There are several walks of varying lengths and ability in the surrounding hills.

If you aren't keen on the steep walk to the top, the gondola is a good alternative. I think it was about 20 bucks per person for a single and the ride took about 5 minutes.
There are great views from the top and a number of walks you can do. I parked my car in the gondola car park, caught the gondola, then walked down to Lyttelton which was a charming place full of eclectic cafes and shops. There is a regular bus service from Lyttelton to the gondola, it probably wouldn't be too far to walk if you didn't fancy the bus ride.

How do I get from port to the Gondolas then grom the Gondolas to the trams? Whats the best way to do this.
Written 7 July 2024
Kia ora, and thank you for your query.
You will be best to check with your cruise company about the best way to get from the ship to either the Christchurch Gondola or Christchurch's central city, as different cruise lines offer different options for this.
In terms of getting to the Christchurch Gondola, we offer a direct Gondola Shuttle between Christchurch's central city and the Christchurch Gondola on cruise ship days - the Gondola Shuttle stop is right by one of our Christchurch Tram stops. The #8 public bus also operates between Christchurch's central city and Lyttelton and includes a stop directly outside the doors of the Christchurch Gondola.
We hope this helps, and for any further questions please feel free to contact our reservations team at info@christchurchattractions.nz.

Do I have to buy tickets in advance? Or can I buy tickets at the gate when we get there? We’re driving and not sure what time we’ll get there.
Written 22 January 2023
Thank you for your query.
You are welcome to purchase tickets on arrival at the Christchurch Gondola if you wish to. Guests can also choose to pre-purchase tickets in advance via our website but this is not essential.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions, and we hope to see you at the Christchurch Gondola soon.

Is it possible for someone who uses crutches to ride on the gondola, please. Do you allow time to get on and off?
Written 15 January 2023
Thank you for your query.
Yes, the Christchurch Gondola is able to accommodate guests on crutches (we can also accommodate manual wheelchairs that are up to 600mm wide so as to fit into our cabins, and have a wheelchair on site that guests can transfer to if their own wheelchair is too wide to be accommodated in the cabins).
Our Christchurch Gondola team can slow or stop the cabins to assist with boarding and disembarking, so please let our reception staff and operators know that you require assistance boarding and they will be happy to assist.
Our Summit Station complex is set over several levels with a central stairwell. A lift is available for guests who require this, allowing access to the top floor. Please note that the Christchurch Discovery Ride is the only part of the complex that is not accessible via the lift.
Please feel free to contact us directly at info@christchurchattractions.nz if you have any further questions, and we hope to see you at the Gondola.

Written 7 August 2020
Thank you for your enquiry.
Unfortunately our Gondola Shuttle bus is not currently operating, but there are several options available for accessing the Christchurch Gondola.
There is a large free carpark at the Base Station for guests who choose to drive their own vehicles to the complex.
For those wishing to take public transport to visit the Christchurch Gondola, the number 28 public bus stops immediately outside the Base Station building.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions about our attraction.

Is there a road takes you right to the top of gondola if incase some pax don’t want to go in cabin? Due to there own motion sickness in cabins at height?
Written 19 September 2019
Thank you for your enquiry.
There is no public road access to the top of Mount Cavendish where our Gondola summit station is located.
There is a walking track which leads up to the summit station from nearby our base station: this is called the Bridle Path, and there is a track up to the summit station from where the Bridle Path reaches the top of the Port Hills. The track is quite steep in places and it takes around 45-60 minutes to walk up to the Gondola. A reasonable level of fitness and walking shoes are required.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Kind regards,
Emma

Is it possible to book a one way ticket?
If so, do you need to book this ticket at the Gondola station at the bottom?
We are interested in walking up the Bridle path and along the ridge and riding the Gondola back down.
Cheers in advance,

Yes, we do sell one-way tickets at the Gondola: these are not available to purchase online but can be purchased in person at the Gondola's base station or at the gift store at the top station.

Thank you for your enquiry.
The Christchurch Gondola is located at 10 Bridle Path Road in Heathcote (a 15-minute drive from the city centre). If you do not have your own vehicle we do operate a Gondola Shuttle which departs from outside the Canterbury Museum (tickets can be purchased from the driver).
Punt and Gondola tickets can be purchased on arrival at either attraction, but please note that we highly recommend reserving a time at Punting to avoid long waits. You can call Punting on on the Avon on 03 366 0337 to organise a time.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions.

Hi
We are only in Christchurch from early morning until we have to catch a flight to Wellington at 1pm so would need to be at the airport at 12. Is there enough time for us to experience the Gondola and get to the airport on time?
thanks
Written 2 March 2018
Thank you for your enquiry.
The Gondola opens at 10am daily, and you would likely need to leave just prior to 11:30am to arrive at the airport by 12pm.
1.5 hours would be plenty of time to spend at the Gondola: the trip each way takes around 5-10 minutes, and there is a cafe, gift store, walking tracks and Time Tunnel history ride at the top station.
Please feel free to contact us directly if you have any further questions.
Kind regards,
Emma
