The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

Was our initial experience looking at the beauty of New Zealand - we weren't disappointed. Was amazed at the color of the rivers - a deep blue unlike anything I've ever seen before. Great views of the mountains, waterfalls and scenery. Only drawback was in the open air viewing (and picture taking) car was the diesel exhaust which sometimes came... More

Unfortunately, due to recent fires, this is not currently operational. However there is a bus service laid on which is a good service and some of the views are spectacular. I have only rated it as a 4 as I was disappointed about the train not running

A train journey that has it all from Christchurch to Greymouth on the West Coast. Taking in magnificent natural scenery as you pass through the Southern Alps, as well as incredible feats of engineering and tunnelling through the beautiful but rugged terrain The commentary on the trips is informative and interesting taking in historical and geological facts as well as... We had booked this trip as one of the highlights of our trip. Unfortunately there was a bush fire the week before which destroyed bridges and viaducts. They estimated it would be A Rail at the earliest that the train could run again. However, they offered us a replacement and we needed to get to Greymouth. I must admit, they... More

Loved the journey on this train. I stayed out on the open carriage most of the way and the views were breathtaking. My trip was before major earthquakes that rocked the region so travel now might be a little different. If it is still running the Arthur's Pass route then it is really worth it.

A wonderful way to travel from the east to west coast or visa versa. A great way to see the fantastic views. You get given head sets which have commentary through out the trip. It was very informative. Was a shame you missed out on that talk when you went to the viewing platform. Maybe they could put a speaker... More

Raining on the day we traveled, but views still beautiful. It is breathtaking when you first see the rivers with the schist dust suspended in the water and the vibrant blue color it creates. Train is very comfortable, open viewing car is fine except for the diesel fumes, which diminish the experience. Great way to travel to Arthur's Pass from... More

Very much enjoyed the comfort as well as the narrative describing the passing scenery. Cars were comfortable with tables and a restaurant close by.
