The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks.

The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

Nice 4 1/2 hour train trip from Christchurch to Greymouth through the gorges, mountains and glens.

Nice train trip, leisurely, lots of beautiful scenery. I thought it would be more "dramatic" since it is touted as one of THE MOST SCENIC train trips in the world. It's lovely, don't get me wrong. But it isn't nearly as "dramatic" as I thought it would be. Still well worth doing and so very nice! You get headsets to... More

I got a return ticket from Christchurch to Greymouth on the day and it cost over $300 dollars. My fault for not buying in advance. The scenery is spectacular but very weather dependent. The Waimak Gorge in particular is stunning. The food and drinks are reasonably priced. The commentary is the same in both directions, so take a book or... More

The scenery all the way to Greymouth was incredible. The open carriage on the train was great for photographers when not too crowded. I enjoyed most of the commentary, My only complaint would be the squeaky carriage on the return journey. Really noisey and the rather unprofessional commentary at the end of the journey that no one really understood Other... More

The train is nicely appointed and comfortable. The trip over was kind of boring and long - two women failed to heed the ample warning to return to the train at Arthur's pass stop and were left behind. The rest had to wait an hour at the next stop while a truck was sent to fetch them. The trip back:... More

We took the train from Christchurch to Greymouth a few days ago & it was lovely! Very spectacular views on both sides of the train, also headphones are provided and a commentary to listen to while traveling thru the beautiful scenery of New Zealand. Very informative and learned a few things along the way. There are a few stops to... More

This trip was amazing - as were the views of this beautiful region of the South Island. The train was modern, clean and comfortable and the buffet facilities great. I felt like I was travelling business class of a plane. Do this - you won't regret it!

Took a tour up to authors pass and saw some amazing waterfalls then hopped on the train from Arthur's pass back to Christ church. We traveled through the southern alps viewing the alpine scenery through panoramic windows. Awesome scenery!!!

Great views and they give you a headset so you can hear commentary about the areas that you are going through. It is worth experiencing.
