Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Although the beaches of NZ of absolutely stunning, this one proved to be quite dodgy. We went here during the school holidays and it was quite busy. We parked in a public parking spot for only about half an hr to walk the dogs. There was a lot of trash on the beach. Beer bottles, random discarded shoes, lots of plastic. I collected 3 trash bags worth of trash while walking! When we got back, my car window was completely smashed, and my purse, which was hidden under my son's car seat, was stolen. (I had put it there before we left for the beach so it's not like someone saw me put it there). Park ranger's office was closed, and a city council member that I spoke to immediately afterwards was not helpful at all. Apparently this happens quite often here. So why not put a camera up?? I thought this was a family spot, but if you can't feel safe, then, no, it's not.

Huge sandpit with water play, awesome flying fox. More relaxing for parents than Margaret Mahy (in town) fewer crowds, too. Great place for free play on a nice day.

Perfect place! Had a catch up which involved 4 kids between 4-7. This place was perfect. Flying foxes, huge fields for kicking the ball around, swings, great hide and seek location and easy sitting places for the parents. We only played at the playground but I believe there are heaps more activities on site here.

Playgrounds, mini-golf, farm animals, playing fields, easy access to the beach and mountain biking trails ... this is a great place to spend the day. But bring your lunch - the cafeteria leaves a lot to be desired!

Lovely laid back park and picnic area which is within walking distance to the beach. BBQ's available, adventure playground, paddling area for children, flying fox and miniature golf etc
PLenty of room for games to be played, and walking and biking tracks available for all the family.

This place is chockful of people during the summer months. It's a perfect place for family outing and an ideal place for people who want to experience what Kiwi culture is all about, barbeque and mingling with your neighbours. Naturally, many people have forged lifelong friendships here. That being said, it has got nothing spectacular to offer especially during the quieter months of the year. It's not somewhere that you make an effort to go to.

NEVER NEVER go there over xmas/new year! Place is full of drunken teenagers staggering around smashing bottles. Place is in a nice spot tho, close to the beach, fishing, mountain biking and lots of other stuff.
good place to stay off peak as its pretty empty and you will be able to pick and choose where you want to stay. the place is HUGE with a good play ground for kids (one of the best ive seen)

It's even better now!
Spencer Park has upgraded their facilities and they are brilliant!
This is a BIG park so much of room you are definitely not in each other's living room.
Fabulous kitchen, a real joy to cook there, and do the dishes!!
Beautiful toilets and showers (although the music they have over the speakers is
'The Edge' and pushing 70 quite hard, I would have preferred the 'Magic' radio station! :) ), which are clean (and cleaned regularly). The showers are lovely (and 'free') although time-limited (as they should be - although there is tons of time to have a nice shower, including hair wash etc)
The staff are really friendly and helpful.
Only downside (apart from the 'Magic' radio station not playing through the speakers - I'm pushing 70 so my needs are probably different to most :) ) is that there is nowhere to hang your towel when having a wash (this does not apply to the shower cubicles, where there are some hooks). I had to hang my towel over the light switch (see photos). This is common with many motor camps throughout New Zealand, they generally provide great facilities but forget the 'little, but important things (first world problem I know) for their customers.
A great place to stay, I will be staying here again and recommended to others.

Hi. We're looking at coming for a bbq on Saturday, do we need to book anything? Or can we just turn up.
And can we bring our own bbq in case the ones there are being used.
Thanks
Wayne
