Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We did the Governors Bay Heritage Walk. This is a beautiful path that is dog friendly and very easy. We walked this path everyday while we were staying near Governors Bay and it’s so different of the high and low tides, the views are very beautiful and it’s a dirt path. It was approx 3km flat path to get to Governors Bay from Allandale and you can add more onto it. It is approx 8km return.

I would say that you come to Governors Bay for three reasons.

One to go to the old pub, or the café, or to do the coastal walk.

I have done all three and can recommend the trip over there to enjoy and to experience these three points of interest.

The bay itself is tidal so the view of the water can change depending on the time of the day.

The walk (all flat) around the coast is well maintained and nice enough to enjoy either before or after a trip to the café or pub.

Governors Bay is a beachside suburb and coastal village near Lyttelton. It is a beautiful traditional town.

Nice day so drove from Christchurch to go for a walk on pier in photo, couldn't as area and road closed to it and rotted away in water and seem to be like that for quite a while, disappointing

We spent 10 days in a quaint cottage here.
Not much in Govenors bay (hamlet) but the sea views and tracks along the shoreline are wonderful.
Highspot of our stay wrre the days we spent in the gardens of Ohinetahi. Amd inspirational garden, cared for ny two engagingly typical dpwn to earth kiwis.
Some of the sculptures were truely womderful

We stayed here overnight and the publican was friendly and the dinner top class. Our room was a bit smaller than our last stay but warm and comfortable with French doors out to the covered corner of the balcony and views out to Lyttelton Harbour. The bar / restaurant was quiet on a Tuesday night but locals dining there were friendly and we had an enjoyable evening. We will be back.

Governors Bay is where I have lived for the past 12 years. i would never want to move from here. We are at the head of Lyttelton Harbour - Lyttelton is a mere 12 minute drive from here right around the Summit Road with scenic views all the way. Governors Bay has a wonderful hotel where you can have lunch or dinner - accommodation is also available. We also have the SHE Chocolate Cafe and shop with beautiful chocolates for sale. There is a lovely walk around the Bay from the Jetty (we are currently raising funds to replace the damaged Jetty - (sadly Earthquakes responsible for its destruction ) the walk is the original horsetrack around the head of the Harbour and is flat all the way around to Allandale where there are toilet facilities available. Governor Bay also has a wonderful primary school which has one of the best views in the Bay. Well worth a visit if driving it is a 15 minute drive from the City over the Port Hills - stop at the Sign of the Kiwi for an overall view of the City skyline. and maybe an icecream (yes there is a lovely café at the Top. Continue down the otherside of the hills and you will come to Governors Bay - bays further around include Charteris Bay, Diamond Harbour and Purau Bay. Come see this wonderful place sometime - very popular during the summer months.

Beautiful bay with great photo opportunities. The drive from Christchurch via Lylttleton is very scenic. And the colour of the water - striking!

The jetty is still awaiting repair and it adds beautiful interest when taking photos.

A few places nearby serving coffee/cakes/meals etc...

The drive to Governors Bay offers many amazing views, both when coming from Lyttleton or over the hill from Christchurch. Do the round trip for both views and you will be stopping often for those photo opportunities (NOT SELFIES!!)\
The water in the bay is not exactly inviting for a swim as it is particularly muddy looking and the jetty has been closed due to it's state of disrepair following the earthquake.
Great for an afternoon drive.

An early morning Sunday walk alongside the waters edge. The terrains is flat and easy so suitable for most types of walkers. The path is wide and shared with runners and cyclists. During walk we enjoyed some great vistas, nature (birds and plants). The walk is about an hour and there is a WC at Allandale so you can have a ‘comfort break’ before the return walk.
