Tunnel beach is at the bottom of a short, but steep, walk across private land (closed 1st August to end of October, for lambing). In the 1870's it was farmed by John Cargill, he had a tunnel dug to allow his children to access the beach. The beach itself has stunning sandstone formations, some resident pidgeons, Sea caves and some very old graffiti.

To get to tunnel beach it is a steep walk downhill all the way until you get to the tunnel. The tunnel is short and comes out on the other side of the cliffs which is quite a sight to see. If you're not at least relatively fit don't even try it because the walk back up is quite strenuous.... More

Tough walk especially coming back up. The walk may be a little tough for those who don't have a good fitness level. The entire area has some fantastic views, Tunnel Beach, St. Clair Beach, St. Kilda Beach and along the beach driving on John Wilson Ocean Drive is also well worthwhile (last past of the rod is only open 1100-1500... This is a great place to visit and has some really good views, however I found it treacherous under foot. It was last winter when I went and it was wet, icy and muddy and the path was not suitably maintained. It was also very steep and I had to stop on the way back up!

We decided to go and have a look today, which was really windy with rain threatening. Coffee take away van at top in car park. The descent and ascent is steep and in parts the path is quite loose so take care. However the trip down and back up is really worth it. Wear good shoes and take a camera... More

Moderate hike. Took us 40mins (the signs suggested ~1hr). Steep incline on the way back but well worth the trip! I would imagine it could be quite slippery on a rainy day. Bring a wind breaker and check the tides. There's a little carved tunnel down to some rocks which would be dangerous on the bottom at high tide (or... More

Path going down seemed a little steep but going down you don't think too much of it! Tunnel beach itself was pretty cool. Sad story behind it. Once we walked down the steps to the beach, turned the corner over the rocks and there was a seal napping in the sun. Even with people chatting around it, walking by and... More

This is a lovely area - accessed by foot for the last part. If you are pressed for time you don't need to go all the way too the beach but you might not get the full impact. The walk down is a bit steep in places and will get the heart rate up a bit.

Thought this would be something to do on a free day in Dunedin. The walk down was amazing. The view of the Pacific is great. Cool tunnel leading down to the beach where the views of the ocean and cliffs were awesome. The walk back up was not as fun, but can realistically be done by anyone. Took us about... More

If you have the stamina and time to walk all the way down and all the way up again this beach is a perfect breath of fresh air and a short jaunt from the centre of town.

I had heard a lot about the beach so decided to visit it during my stay in Dunedin. However I have an old knee injury and the climb was too steep for a person with this handicap. I am writing this review only as a reminder to people who are old or with a partial handicap...its not for us.
