Tunnel beach is at the bottom of a short, but steep, walk across private land (closed 1st August to end of October, for lambing). In the 1870's it was farmed by John Cargill, he had a tunnel dug to allow his children to access the beach. The beach itself has stunning sandstone formations, some resident pidgeons, Sea caves and some very old graffiti.

This beautiful beach is only a short drive from Dunedin CBD (about 7kms). the walk down the well maintained man made path offers many places to stop and take in the stunning views. once at the bottom of the track, you find the tunnel which takes you down to the beach. The beach has both rocks and sand, and a... More

Stunning views, quite a long steep walk so allow plenty of time and take water. Allow at least an hour, extra time to take photos and explore tunnel beach. You will be seeing the effects of wind water and time on the coastline.

Free parking is available for a 60 to 90 minute walk (time, depends on one's fitness) down the cliff tops (on a man made fine pebble stone path)(Cargill's Castle or the remnants off can be seen at the top of the cliffs above the beach ).Take your swim wear as this option is available when you reach the bottom (depends though... Beautiful landscape!!! But would not recommend to anyone who is not in shape, have heart issues, knee or back problems. The hike down and then back up is very difficult!! That being said, once you get close to see its amazing!!! Was a little disappointed when I found the "tunnel". Thought it would be something bigger etc but pretty cool!

The walk down to Tunnel Beach is long and steep but well worth the effort. The headland is beautiful with stunning views and at low tide you can descend a man made tunnel cut into the rock to access the beach. The climb back up the hill is exhausting but well worth it. We were rewarded with a fresh fruit... More

I hadn't read anything about Tunnel Beach before visiting. It was just a beach down the road from our AirB&B. When we got there, though: Wow!! First off, this is not easy to get to. You must be able to walk down (and eventually up) a long, very steep walkway. Once you get to the tunnel viewing spot, there is... More

A spot that should be a film location! Apparently discovered back in the 1800's when a local family wanted somewhere quieter than St Clair Beach ( before erosion had set in I think). The father built a stairway in the rocks to gain access to a pristine white sand cove surrounded by fabulous geological rock features. The water is dramatic... More

Headed out on a two week cruise going through Australia and New Zealand. Traveling with sibs and their spouses. We each picked a port and researched it and planned the itinerary. What to do in Dunedin? Stumbled upon this location - Tunnel Beach. This is a must see destination and don't miss out by stopping short on the hike down... More

Amazing views and the pathway has been well maintained considering the large amount of foot traffic. Definitely would recommend to tourists and visitors to Dunedin

Great view and unusual story about the tunnel. the walk down has amazing views and you not only have the tunnel to walk through but also the amazing cliffs and head land to explore. was extremely windy when we visited but still well worth the walk with amazingly big seas. Average fitness need and if you have kids keep an... More
