About
Discover New Zealand’s only Castle, built 1871 by William Larnach, merchant baron and politician, for his beloved first wife Eliza. It took more than 200 workmen three years to build the Castle shell and master European craftsmen spent a further 12 years embellishing the interior. Larnach spared no expense on his dream home, which features the finest materials from around the world. The Castle is still privately owned and cared for by the Barker family who purchased it as their home in 1967. Decades have been spent on the Castle's restoration, with the family having restored empty buildings from ruin and assembled a large collection of original New Zealand period furniture and antiques. Open to the public throughout, this conservation project has been funded through admission fees. The family has always been committed to opening their home and sharing this significant period of Dunedin and New Zealand's history.Scandalous and tragic stories, spectacular tower views and a Garden of International Significance complete this enjoyable award-winning experience. Boutique Lodge accommodation is available in the Castle gardens. Weddings, Balls, Conferences and Celebrations are held in the beautiful 3000 square foot Ballroom. High Tea is also now served daily in the Ballroom at 3pm

- mdh969Canberra, Australia1,034 contributionsCastle visitWe did the castle tour and garden tour. It was $45.00 per person. If you have trouble walking, there is a car park further up from the first one you come across. The grounds were very well kept and the walk through the castle was great. We went back for dinner in the castle later that day. It was $85.00 per person and it was a four course meal. Everyone got the same meal. It was OK, but the third course was venison, which was not to everyone’s taste. If we had our time again, we would not have had the dinner and just done the garden and castle tour.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 October 2023
- GV14218Saint Paul, Minnesota38 contributionsHistoric house and gardens well worth a visitNicely restored and well-maintained 19th century house/castle. Self-guided tour meant we went through at our own pace. Gardens were equally good, well worth walking through. We had dessert and espresso at the cafe; quality and prices were good. Highly recommended for an hour or half day visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 November 2023
- Holdy's HolidaysAustralia81 contributionsDefinitely worth the visitWe visited the castle for not only the tour but high tea. The castle and Gardens were simply amazing. Such a beautiful place and well worth the visit. On arrival to the tea rooms (for high tea) one of the staff brushed my wife off when we asked about our high tea then proceeded to help others. We felt a little unwelcome. Eventially when served, the high tea was amazing and the rest of the staff were great.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 November 2023

- Julie6 contributionsA peaceful overnight experienceWe had a very comfortable stay in the stables, warm rooms with plenty of shared showers etc for all. We loved our Trust the Chef 4 course meal in the music room at the castle, which was very good value with the pre dinner drink included too. Breakfast was delicious and cooked perfectly. We loved having access to the castle and gardens over the 2 days, so nothing was rushed. The staff were all very friendly, helpful and accommodating. A Must Do when visiting Dunedin!Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 18 December 2023
- Patricia050875Singapore, Singapore707 contributionsA tour down memory laneI am glad that we started the tour at 9am sharp. There was barely anyone there until around 9.30am. We followed the sequence of the tour according to the guide. Started with the basement one then go all the way up two more level then to the roof top. I think at level 3, there is this dressing room where there was a mannequin hanging horizontally on the ceiling which my family felt quite uncomfortable watching it. Upon checking later on with the friend staying at Dunedin then we understood the story behind the mannequin. Overall a pleasant experience to tour the castle and the garden. We spent 2.5 hours touring including taking our lunch there.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024

Beautiful gardens with amazing views, good information sheets supplied on entry re the castle, gardens & plants. Spent about 4 + hours here, entry fee seemed expensive at first but considering the time we spent & enjoyment we had was worth it.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 January 2024
- Paul D10 contributionsHistorically important castleWe visited the castle as part of a cruise ship excursion that included sight seeing in Dunedin. The castle and surrounding gardens are spectacular and there is a wonderful view over the waters to port chalmers. If you are planning to see the castle, though, I highly recommend doing one of the guided tours. The guides are highly knowledgeable on the history of the castle, which has an extremely interesting past.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 January 2024

Well maintained but would expect that for the admission price which was pretty high for a relatively small garden. We hired a driver for our one day in Dunedin. Unfortunately for us, it was cold and raining the entire day. After some outdoor touring in inclement weather, we opted for something indoors -- the Larnach Castle. There is a flat fee of $34 NZ per person for visiting the castle and gardens
Since it was cold and raining, we were not interested in visiting the gardens. The large, multi-level home was built in 1871 and purchased by the Barker family in 1967, who have spent years restoring it. If you have an interest in historic homes and furniture, you will enjoy this more than we did. We spent less than an hour touring the home. There is a restaurant in the building that serves high tea for an additional fee and that must be booked 24 hours in advance.
It is possible to tour the gardens only for a fee of $17 NZ per person.

We hope you enjoyed your visit to Larnach Castle and it's gardens. It's unfortunate to hear the weather prevented you from exploring the gardens.
The restoration of the Castle would not be possible without the support of visitors such as you.

With a $34 entry fee for the castle and gardens we decided to skip the castle and just tour the grounds.
For $17 each it was a pleasant experience, though half of this is the drive out, and views from nearby scenic spots.
Gardens are pleasant, but not extensive and could be seen in half an hour.
We badly timed our visit for the day 2 cruise liners were in port so the experience was disturbed by endless coaches coming up from the port, every single one of which was met by some badly played bagpipe tunes.
There's a small restaurant on site which had some decent offerings.
Nice views, good staff, pleasant garden - not a must see unless you are really into gardens and old houses.

Fabulous guided tour with one of the Monarch drivers. Very interesting heritage on this building. Gardens are gorgeous and on a nice day create a lovely area to sit and ponder. The restaurant was quite busy when we were there and a few people did not get their orders before needing to catch bus. recommend you order well in advance and check on it if not received in 10 minutes. Possibly new staff in training and busy could be the reason. But ton the whole, Larnach Castle is a must see/do experience.

Larnach Castle’s beautiful interior has intricately carved ceilings, one of which (the main foyer) took over six years to finish. There are 43 rooms, and a staff of 46 servants was required at the time that the Larnach’s owned the mansion. Although the house is magnificent, my favorite part about this “castle” is the grounds. The home sits on 35 acres, with a surrounding additional 300 acres of farmstead. Larnach Castle’s gardens are absolutely gorgeous. In fact, it’s one of five gardens in New Zealand to be rated “Garden of International Significance” by the New Zealand Garden Trust. The gardens have a really unique collection of flowers and plants. In addition, there’s a Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, a Rainforest, and my favorite part, the Laburnum Arch, through which you can find incredible views. The views of the Otago Harbour and surrounding area from the gardens and castle are spectacular

Was given a grab one voucher for 1 x night stay in the Larnach Lodge which included a “trust the chef” dinner and a self guided tour of the castle.
Very disappointed with the food during dinner. At $85 per person, the portions were small and I’d expected more than meat and roast veges for dinner, and a lemon loaf for dessert. The staff were not attentive with refilling beverages or water. It was a unique experience dining in the castle with everyone seated at one long royal table but I would not recommend anyone to pay for the experience.
The castle itself is beautiful from the outside however the inside of the castle and surrounding gardens are nothing to rave about and I would have been disappointed if I paid to visit Larnach Castle.
However lovely gentleman working at the lodge was welcoming and friendly and the room was very homely and we enjoyed our stay in the lodge.

We visited the castle with a small group of friends, on our day in Dunedin when our cruise ship docked in the close by Port Chalmers. We had hired a vehicle and drove the scenic route to Lanarch Castle. The Castle is situated in a beautiful area, high up on the hills overlooking Dunedin.
Because we were on our own timetable, we had plenty of time to meander our way around the various rooms, and the surrounding gardens. Definitely suggest taking the many winding stairs all the way to the top landing as the view from the open tower is magnificent.
We had a Devonshire Tea in the cafe on site and it hit the spot on the cold Spring day that we visited

I knew that this was not going to be an actual castle… but more of an estate. Even so, I could not have been more disappointed with our experience. We arrived at 10:30 AM on a Friday when two buses also arrived. The staff gladly took our tickets and money, but the 150 people from the motor coaches took over the place.
The tour guides closed the doors on half of the rooms and would not allow us to enter. Even if we could’ve entered, we would’ve been jam packed in with 30 people in tiny rooms making it impossible to see anything. The rooms were small, rather dark and dingy, with only a few pieces of furnishings, artwork, etc.. if you have ever been to castles in Ireland, or Scotland, you will be disappointed in this, trust me— save your money! This was not impressive.
I spoke to a member of their staff about our experience, and she was not sympathetic. She just said our timing was unfortunate and suggested we go upstairs since the 150 bus people had re-boarded their buses. We were on a schedule & had to leave for a lunch reservation at the Glenfalloch Gardens Cafe & Restaurant (which I highly recommend— make a reservation!).
Anyhow, as we were leaving another loaded bus pulled up.
They clearly do not have a handle on how to manage admissions, which should be controlled, since the house is small.
She made no apologies, nor did she offer to credit back any of our admission fee. She simply casually said she’d talk with the tour leaders. It was evident they cared more about the big buses bringing in big money, over the casual visitor like my husband, daughter, and me.
The gardens were just slightly better.

We spent a couple of hours inside the Castle with a guide, Dick, from Headfirst Tours and were gobsmacked at the stunning restoration that has been achieved by the family that own the castle. We ran out of time, so didn't see all of the Ballroom Cafe and the gardens. Allow plenty of time so that you can see it all, it is truly amazing.

We did this tour with Monarch Wildlife tours and our guide had lots of information and fascinating history to share about the castle, its owner and his family, as well as about the family who is continues to restore and maintain it beautifully. As probably the only real castle in NZ, it is well worth a visit. The banqueting hall is now a cafe, but can also be hired for weddings and other functions.

We had high tea and access to the gardens.
The high tea had a wonderful range of sandwiches, savoury tarts, cakes and scones. We were a party of 6 with two children under the age of 5 so paid for 4 adults. There was more than sufficient treats for all 6 of us.
While we thought the high tea area would be a little more exclusive, it was part of the general coffee shop area where others came for coffee and cake.
It is to be recommenced for what we chose or just for having coffee/cake/sandwiches.
We also enjoyed the gardens but to a lesser extent than others we have enjoyed at other castles overseas.

I'm visiting Dunedin for a week. I'm staying near the octagon and am on a bit of a budget so I'm preferring not to taxi. Are there any buses or affordable travel options that go from Dunedin city to Larnach Castle?
Written 24 November 2022
It depends on whether you enjoy exploring fantastic old buildings like the castle, and walking in lovely gardens. I'm in my 50s and loved our most recent experience, a high tea and garden tour, but I first visited Larnach Castle as a child, and have been there many times now. I probably enjoyed different things at different ages and stages of my life, but I've always enjoyed visiting. There are always people of all ages there!

Hi Sunshine1
Thank you for your inquiry, yes our Cafe is open from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm on Christmas day. Its potentially going to be very busy so we have decided not serve High tea's that day. We will have Christmas themed options on the menu available through out the day. We wont be taking bookings but generally there is no problem getting a table.
Kind regards
