Penguin Place is a private conservation effort to help save the world's most endangered penguin, the Yellow Eyed Penguin. Visitors are taken on guided walking tours through a unique system of trenches and hides to view the penguins undisturbed at close range. Penguin Place is funded 100% by the support of our visitors, this funding enables habitat restoration, predator control, a research programme and on-site rehabilitation for sick, starving and wounded penguins. It is our hope that through our efforts, the future of this rare and wonderful penguin will be assured.

Absolutely fantastic and a must do in Dunedin - remember to book! All proceeds from your ticket go straight to conservation of the endangered yellow eyed penguins. Tour starts with a mini lecture followed by a visit to the penguins hospital. Then it's a charming old minivan road through some spectacular scenery to the trenches where you can observe the... Penguin Place offers small group opportunities to view rare yellow-eyed penguins in the wild and in protected status while learning about their endangered status. Highly recommend.

I am in two minds about Penguin Place. It costs over NZ$50 per person to join a guided group that starts with a presentation, followed by a visit to a couple of pens containing mainly juvenile Yellow Eyed Penguins that are being looked after, then a visit to a secluded private beach where some are nesting/ living. I am an... More

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately the Yellow-eyed penguin is actively declining and you will never see large numbers of this species. I would have to disagree with your comment 'You could not get a clear photo of any of them. So hence the disappointment' It is wildlife and every tour is different all the photographs taken on our Instagram... More

A great place, doing a great thing. It was highly informative and it felt like you were doing a good thing by just being there, as all money would help to preserve this rare and magnificent bird. Go and enjoy an experience you won't get anywhere else!

Our small tour group was led by the informative guide Megan. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about her job and saving the penguins. There is a bit of walking involved to see the penguins and seals but well worth the visit, both for the learnings and the scenery.

We combined this with a boat trip to see the albatrosses. After the boat trip we were taken in a coach to the site. given an informative talk. Shown two penguins in the hospital then taken on a coach to some hides where we could see another penguin. Sad news was that the number of yellow eyed penguins is reducing.

My husband and I had a wonderful tour in mid-December. We took the 5:45 tour, per their recommendation to take an evening tour. First they gave us a brief overview of penguins generally, the yellow-eyed penguin specifically, and the work the conservation does. It's clear that they care greatly about the work that they do. Then we got to see... More

This place is great for kids. We saw some penguins and the tour through the small tunnels was even in the rain great. Wear closed shoes for the mud :-) we booked the last trip of the day. We visited the penquin hospital as well.

We had heard about this place but we came upon it almost by accident on our journey along the Otago Peninsula. We were so glad that we decided to stop as this was a most meaningful experience. The purpose of this facility is to protect, rehabilitate and study the unique yellow eyed penguins. They are totally funded by tourist fees... More

Amazing journey. We got to see adult penguins coming up the beach and a mother feed her sibling. All just a touch away in a natural and wild enviroment. The views are fantastic with a very well kept homestead and a beautiful wild beach. The money is well worth it because this project has limited funds all of which come... More
