The Otago Peninsula is a long, hilly indented finger of land that forms the easternmost part of Dunedin, New Zealand. Volcanic in origin, it forms one wall of the eroded valley that now forms Otago Harbour. The peninsula lies south-east of Otago Harbour and runs parallel to the mainland for 20 km, with a maximum width of 9 km. It is joined to the mainland at the south-west end by a narrow isthmus about 1.5 km wide.

This is a definite must do. Take the low road out which is the Portobello Road. It is a very narrow twisting road right next to the water. The views are nice. Take it all the way to the end to see the Royal Albatross...More

My wife and I stopped off in the area whilst touring New Zealand and enjoyed the visit. The wild life and scenery are spectacular.

A lovely drive when it’s light and seeing the albatross and blue penguins makes the return journey in the wet and dark is less fun worth finding (like we did) someone to lead the way back to Dunedin!

A slow drive with lots to see however well worth the drive thank goodness for Google maps. Small groups of houses add to the charm.

We did this tour with Back to Nature Tours. Dave McKay was our guide and he was absolutely first class. To be honest, the start to our day wasn’t great, the weather was pretty poor and we were given some duff information from our cruise...More

Absolutely stunning part of Dunedin and well worth spending time pottering around the coastal and high road. There are numerous bays, places to explore and the wildlife is spectacular. A treasure for Dunedin to protect for the generations to come.

It is; there are and spectacular only goes half way to describing the place. And yes, we're protecting the peninsula for as many generations as we can. Rest assured of that! Thanks for your review! Tony

Though on a map of South Island, Otago peninsula appears tiny, actually there's at least a few days worth here - from Royal Albertross and sea lions, to penguins and seals to wonderful walks and stunning scenery. Otago has it all.

Starting late afternoon and collected from our Motel we drove to the Albatross Colony. There was an extra charge to visit the hide to view the nesting area which we didn't do (quite expensive), but viewed many sea birds whilst waiting for those that did....More

I have lived on the Otago Peninsula for over 40 years, yet I still enjoy being a “ tourist in my own backyard”! Taking visitors to see Albatross, Blue Penguins, sea lions, walking on my favorite beach ( top secret!), and either cooking at home or...More

Liz, so am I. Exactly the same sentiments as you express: enjoy the peninsula, but take care of her. We're only custodians, waiting and keeping a lookout for the next generation. Tony

One day is enough in Dunedin we only stayed on route to Christchurch. The penguins only come ashore in the evening and I think you have to do the tour to see them.
