The Seasider is a fantastic additional trip to the Taieri Gorge Railway tour experience. Running in summer, this trip has an option of either a 90 minute trip to Waitati or a four hour trip to the busy highway town of Palmerston. Both choices offer fantastic views over Otago Harbour and the wild coastline. The Seasider is considered a "must-do" railway trip in New Zealand, not just for train enthusiasts, and is a brilliant, qualmark endorsed all weather entertainment option. Enjoyable fun for the whole family. Check out our other awesome train journey - Taieri Gorge Railway.

Train travel is usually expensive on tourist tracks, so we considered the $50 ticket for a 90 minute ride quite reasonable. (A lot less than the rates charged for people booking via cruise ship companies!) The train runs two or three times a day during cruise ship season and we chose the 11:50 am departure. The Silver Fern carriages are... More

We went on the Oamaru Seasider train, 7 hours return. It was well worth the money, we were a bit disappointed at first that due to technical difficulties, the Silver Fern engine was not available and we had to go with diesel engines, BUT in saying that...we got two open air carriages which you do not get with the Silver... We took the Waitati Seasider, this is the shortest of the seasider journeys. If you only have a few days in Dunedin you will not have much choice as the seasider travels the various routes on specific days/dates - not every day. That said we didn't have a lot of time so this route was fine for us. Sadly much... More

We loved this train trip. It was very scenic and we loved our short visit to the town of Oamaru. My only complaint is that I would have liked the train to stop for longer in Oamaru, eg 2 hours. Despite that the trip exceeded my expectations.

I love train travel. I Enjoyed it and disliked it at the same time. My joy came at sitting with the driver amd my son in the cab which is rare theses days. However the trip is pointless if you are driving around NZ you will find better views. The view are ok but nothing to by a postcard about.... More

It was a good trip with a lot of obstructed views. As the trees have grown now you can not see a lot of the trip; this was so disappointing because they advertise that you will see the sea side, you only now have glimpse of the sea side now; which when you do it is breath taking. Hopefully they... More

As a Dunedinite I already knew what I would see on this Railcar day trip to Oamaru. However, the clear sunny day gave me amazing sea views from a different angle than from the road. The views of the Otago Peninsula, of Otago Harbour and up the coast and around Blueskin Bay reminded me of how absolutely beautiful this area... More

Hello and thanks so much for your rating and review. We are really pleased to see you enjoyed your trip with us and also had a nice time in Oamaru. Oamaru really is a fantastic place to visit - especially the heritage area of the town. A must see. Thanks once again Barbara Reid, Marketing Manager, Dunedin Railways More

Lovely station with traditional cafe. Great train ride along the coastal track . we took the shorter route and it was just right. Note that if you buy tickets in advance, they need to be collected from the ticket office. We saw a families tickets resold and they couldn't get their train. They had not collected the actual train tickets.

The scenery from the railway just north of Dunedin was a real surprise. However, much of it can also be seen from the main highway. Therefore, much of the enjoyment revolves around the train itself, and in this regard, there were two main areas of disappointment: dirty windows and limited food options. The two-car "Silver Fern" has no outside viewing... More
