The Homer Tunnel is really well operated, with big signs with the wait time at each end of the tunnel. Kea's often hang around here, so was a good chance to get a few pictures of the bird while waiting to go through.

Granted, that there are tunnels in the US and bridges and all of that, but this is kind of unique. A single-lane tunnel that gets you from one side of the mountains to the other. It's dimly lit and you have to take turns via...More

The tunnel is in between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Because of only 1 lane of driving was allowed that people should take some time to wait for switch the lane. As a result, it could be a good opportunity to take photos.

This tunnel alone was worth the drive to Milford. It is a one way tunnel so be prepared to wait 5-10 minutes in queue. A spectacular feat of engineering!

Safe, well-maintained tunnel; has traffic lights at both ends to make sure traffic is one-way at a time; allow about 10 minutes for the wait and to drive through; allow 2 - 2.5 hours to drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound; it doesn't seem...More

The road from Te Anau to Milford Sound is beautiful with a number of good stopping off points on the way. Most of these are views and/ or walks. The Homer Tunnel is different. The tunnel has a 1 in 10 gradient and takes about...More

While I appreciate what it took to make the tunnel, what a feat back then... While you may be stopped at lights to go thru, you cannot exit your car. There is no stop, or history point. All you do is drive thru to get...More

We went through this tunnel yesterday on way to & from Milford. Traffic controlled as single lane only. The tunnel was made by blasting through with dynamite, no construction work, water leaks down through the rock, road very wet. We were told that it is...More

Nice view. Rest here on our way to Mildford sound. 1 way inside the tunnel. Follow the trafic sign. Don't feed the bird because its keep coming if you do.

We had a camper van that only just fitted through the tunnel - take care to stay n the middle. Watch carefully as you drive through - look at the rock face that men hacked at for years to create a road through. This is...More

Yes the traffic lights work all year round 365 days regardless of the weather. great trip to do to get to Milford sound. The lights allow one way traffic through the tunnel, usually have a twenty minute wait either side.
