Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart...

Ruggedy Range™ Wilderness Experience tours operate exclusively in Stewart Island and Ulva Island. We are an independent, small local operator specialising in guided walks, overnight treks, bird watching (including pelagic birding) and kiwi spotting tours, boat cruises, sea kayaking and scenic road tours. Our tours are designed to capture the best the island has to offer and carefully matching this to the interests and abilities of the most discerning traveller. Whether you are a gentle explorer or adventurous and active, whether your interests are general or you are an avid birdwatcher, botanist, naturalist or photographer, we certainly have something to offer. Guides bring their in-depth knowledge, a sense of fun with a few local tales, to create a truly memorable experience. We care about the environment and strive to adopt and maintain sustainable practises. Since 2003, we have been donating some of our revenue into our own conservation fund per person per guided tour and water taxi charter. Our tours are all of generous length offering great value. We care about your experience so all our tours are personalised and we can adapt them along the way. Small groups range from 2 to 12 persons. We do cater for private tour groups of more than 12 persons. Customised / private tours are also available. We recommend prior bookings. We operate our own booking office in Stewart Island and we strongly advise that you check directly with us as there are no independent visitors centres in Stewart Island.

Our tour of Ulva Island with Furhana was the absolute best experience of our entire three week trip to New Zealand. You will not find a more experienced, knowledgeable, or committed tour guide than Furhana. She located for us dozens of bird species and offered detailed explanations of the Island's plant life. Thank you to the other people who recommended... More

We had amazing two-days tour in Stewart Island guided by Furhana, touring Ulva Island and some of the Stewart Island rain-forests. We were lucky to have a private trip (more expensive, but worth every sent). Her guidance was pleasant, professional and thorough, and she has a lot of knowledge about the nature, plants and birds. In Ulva Island we had... More

I had a half day Bird Watching and Forest Tour on Ulva Island and it was one of my best experiences and paid activities in NZ! I learned so much about NZ's native plants and birds while being guided by Furhana. I loved the calm, but passionate and attentive way of hers guiding us on Ulva island and narrating on... More

I am not sure how I discovered Ruggedy Range, but am so glad that I did because my two tours with Furhana were among the most memorable of some amazing experiences in a three week visit to this wonderful country. The first tour was to Ulva Island where the walk was tailored towards the group's interest in birds. Furhana identified... More

We just finished a tour with Furhana and are still enjoying everything we saw because we learned so much about what we were seeing. Furhana's knowledge comes from a passion and keen observational skills over many years. She is very skilled at helping each individual in a group see the birds. We were able to hear all the sounds and... More

Furhana was amazing. We learned a lot about the birds, the ecology, the geological history, the environmental activism in NZ and so much more. It was the highlight of our trip. I left another comment and rating last eek but failed to rate it excellent, which is was!

We took 3 tours with Furhana, the first being the 1/2 day at Ulva Island, the second being the Paterson Inlet tour and lastly a Kiwi night tour. She also kindly planned my 1/3 Rakiura Track 'preview' walk where we took her boat out to Port William and then tramp back to Oban. First thing you will notice that she... More

Thank you so much for your review. I enjoyed meeting you and guiding you. Your flexibility in allowing me to make recommendations for you for your time in Stewart Island and your willingness to fit in with our schedules, given that ours is a small business, was appreciated. Our night walk was very eventful and memorable, with a luminescent bug... More

We had a most memorable day trip to Ulva Island with Ruggedy Range. The highlight, apart from the kiwis and other amazing bird life was undoubtedly the knowledge and experience of our guide Furhana. Her knowledge of the birds and plants of the area is amazing and she takes great care to ensure that all her clients have the best... More

Thank you for your appreciation of the work that goes into a guided trip. Wet days can be challenging, especially in terms of client expectations, but they can also be some of the most rewarding days. Whether it rains or is dry - there is really so much to see and learn for anyone interested in birding and natural history.... More

A trip to see the birds and vegetation on Ulva Island is a unique experience. On my visit to the special ecosystem Ruggedy Range's Firhana shared her considerable knowledge of Ulva Island's wildlife. She geared the tour to the interests of participants and made every effort to help each person see and hear about the birds, flowers, trees and plants... More

Thank you for your lovely review. My circumstances have allowed me to develop a strong affinity to nature and a passion for Stewart Island and Ulva Island. Developing an extensive range of tours over the past 17 years has meant that we can readily adapt to circumstances, be it weather or something else. No one should feel that they have... More

Firhana was very knowledgeable and generous with her enthusiasm and care to be sure all participants were able to observe all the birds she found on our walk on Ulva Island. Although highly unlikely, we saw a Kiwi in plain sight about 20 feet from the trail under the forest canopy, looking for seeds, grubs and worms.

I always smile inside and outside when we see a kiwi and know that we were lucky that it happened to be in our vicinity. Such wonderfully strange and unique birds - it would be great to know what they are thinking as they wander around the forest and how they spend their days. Thank you for choosing our trip... More
