This low key sanctuary for some of New Zealand's endangered bird species is well worth visiting. Admission is by a small donation and the site overlooks Lake Te Anau. The Takahe, a flightless waterfowl, were my favourite! Please support the valuable conservation work being conducted...More

There are only 300 remaining existing Kahake birds in the world (they were thought extinct) and you can see two of them here. It is free, it is very close--don't miss them!

The Te Anau bird sanctuary is a must see when visiting Lake Te Anau. The DOC person was informative and helpful, she made the visit well worth while. A great hour.

Just outside of town it's worth a quick look. They have four takahe - there are only about 350 left in the world. It's by donation, so cheap and worth 30 minutes of your time.
