About
Visit the Te Anau Glowworm Caves - an underground network of limestone caves lit by hundreds of glowworms. In the darkness they produce a glittering display. Carved out by the force of the river, the underground world is surprisingly beautiful with whirlpools and roaring waterfalls. Begin with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau and then our nature guides will take you in groups through the caves and then in a small boat into the grotto.

- Brent E3 contributionsAmazing cave experienceWasn't expecting much from the Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour, but the reality far exceeded my expections. I've visited a lot of caves and while I have seen better glowworm displays and there are no decorations, this was one of the best cave experiences I have ever had. Walking up a solution tube on a grate a couple of feet above an active stream was just amazing, then it opens out into a larger cavern with a stunning waterfall that you climb up and around to reach the short boat ride in the dark to see the glowworms. The caves had been closed for the last week due to flooding, so we where really lucky and the creek was at its most boisterous. Absolutely stunning. We're delighted to hear that the Te Anau Glowworm Caves tour is the best cave experience you have had and that you found them stunning! Thank you so much for your fantastic review.Written 14 December 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 October 2023

- Carol M4 contributionsMagical experience. Quite unreal. The whole trip was well organised. There was a guided tour boat trip on Lake TeAnau, a screen show about the glow-worms, complimentary tea or coffee and then we were divided into small groups to be escorted into the cave. While inside, we were seated in the dingy and in silence viewed the spectacular twinkling lights.Thank you for your wonderful review of the Glowworm Caves in Te Anau! - Tony WCambridge, United Kingdom439 contributionsGreat Trip !!This was our first visit to any Glowworm caves, and we were very impressed. It's a busy trip, but extremely well organised. The boat ride along the lake is a nice bonus, with spectacular NZ Fjordland scenery. The cave tour started with a safety briefing and explanation of the origin of the caves. Then a walk into the caves with a guide explaining about the geology etc. It's quite cool, dark & damp so a jacket is well advised. Then it's into a boat for a short river ride in almost pitch blackness - except for all the glowing worms on the walls & ceiling. Then its back to the reception area for hot drinks & a talk about the worms - which are much more interesting than we expected !! Highly recommended.Thank you for your thoughtful review of the Te Anau Glowworm Caves! The Te Anau caves are noticeably smaller than the Waitomo caves, but still amazing - both the glowworms in the dark and the underground waterfalls. - Cliff SSafety Harbor, Florida159 contributionsVery EnjoyableThe first bit was confusing. We had to low-walk through the opening to the cave and I couldn’t see the glow worms that our guide was pointing out. As soon as we got on the little boat, things improved dramatically. The ceiling and some of the sides of the cave had thousands of little green dots. The presentation after was very well done also. This was a fun way to spend the afternoon in Te Anau.Thank you for sharing your experience at the Te Anau Glowworm Caves! While the initial confusion may have been disorienting, we're delighted that the glowworms, beauty of the caves and the presentation afterward made up for it. It's fantastic to know that you found the experience fun and enjoyable overall.Written 9 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- Andrew BLevin, New Zealand38 contributionsGood experience. The boat trip to the caves had a running commentary by one of the boat crew which was informative. We sat on the top deck and there were plenty of opportunities to take photos. Unfortunately, photos were not permitted in the caves but totally understandable. The hosts at the cave tour site provide entertaining and informative detail of what to expect. I was a little underwhelmed perhaps as I had previously visited when I was very young so did not have the same wow factor. The walk was easy, just had to bend down in a couple of places.Thank you for sharing your experience at the Te Anau Glowworm Caves with us! We're glad to hear that you found the boat trip to the caves informative, and that you had plenty of opportunities to take photos from the top deck. We understand that the no photography policy inside the caves may have been disappointing, but we appreciate your understanding. We apologise if the experience felt underwhelming compared to your previous visit, but we're glad that the walk was easy for you, with just a few moments of bending down. We hope to welcome you back for more memorable experiences in the future!Written 9 April 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024

- Renee SColorado Springs, Colorado18 contributionsThrilling Underground AdventureThe glow worms themselves are not the main event in my opinion, but I highly recommend this excursion. First, we had a wild ride across the lake with spectacular views even with fog. There is an interesting explanation before entering the cave. Do not expect an American style tour. Underground, it is narrow and you walk over a roaring underground river on a metal walkway in parts. In other parts, you have to duck down around overhangs. It is pitch black and silent in the cave with the worms, and you have 12 people shoulder to shoulder in a small dory. You have to entirely trust your guide to get you back to the light. A few people who were claustrophobic turned away. Even for the adventuresome, it is a bit tense, but that is what made the tour so extraordinary. Great experience.Thank you for sharing your experience at the Te Anau Glowworm Caves with us! We're thrilled to hear that you highly recommend the trip, despite the unique challenges it presents. It sounds like you had an adventurous and memorable journey, from the wild ride across the lake with spectacular views to the interesting explanation before entering the cave. Quite a pricey trip but worth it for a lovely lake boat ride, wander through caves, boat ride in the cave and to see lots of glow worms. Other reviewers commented on the need to crouch at the start of the cave; this is true but my husband and I (both very tall, average fitness) managed fine. Cameras not permitted. Enjoy the quiet!!

This was a fantastic, well run experience. The ferry over was good, and as soon as we arrived it was very well organised. The actual experience starts as soon as you leave the ferry. The walk to the caves is an experience in itself and really fun. The glow worms were everywhere in the cave and being in complete silence while we ventured around the cave in a small boat was spectacular. I would recommend you book at the booking office in Te Anau, we booked the day before our tour and the prices were a little cheaper than online, we got a great kids go free special because of holidays.

We arrived in Te Anau around noon. Our accommodations were not ready yet so we went to lunch and bought tickets for 3 no 4 pm. Boat ride to cross the lake takes about 30 minutes or so. You cannot take pictures in the caves since the only authorized light comes from the guide. Not even GoPros with its light. That’s ok. They want to protect the environment. Partial hike over metal grates ending with a short boat ride guided by a cable. Incredible to see these worms in near complete darkness. They actually provide the light. Activity for all ages. Not too young if the kids are not comfortable in complete darkness. Tour ends with a short lecture with free coffee and tea. Boat takes you back to Te Anau.

We had a fantastic few hours on our tour. The whole operation is very slick from the beautiful boat ride over Lake Te Anau to the glow worm cave tour itself. It was a bit hard to hear the guide when we were inside the cave and it would have benefitted from giving us all ear pieces so we could hear her, but let's face it, we were there to see the glow worms and it was amazing. A little bit of bending is required to get into the caves, and obviously it's dark in there so you have to be a bit careful underfoot, but honestly it wouldn't cause problems for many people.
TOP TIP: When you arrive, the group is split into smaller groups. Some go straight into the caves whilst others have a little talk about glow worms and then you swap. If you can, make sure you're one of the last off the boat so you get to have the talk first. Then you know more about what you're seeing.

A short boat ride across Lake Te Anau takes you to the cave site. After a presentation, you are taken into the caves, first walking, then in a small punt. It's only seconds before your eyes acclimatise to the dark and the glow-worms appear, looking like a starry sky above you and clinging to the walls. Probably the most surreal experience I have ever had and I definitely recommend taking the time to do this trip. The only downside was that the noise of rushing water within the cave meant I couldn't hear what the guide was saying, and a system of earphones might help. It didn't really detract from the visit, as everyone was caught up in the beauty of the place.
One tip: When the guide tells you before going into the cave to watch your head as there are some very low ceilings, take note and duck!

We began with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau on board the luxury catamaran Luminosa, heading for the western side of the lake. On arrival we entered the Caves through Cavern House where informative displays showed the the history of this 12000 year old underground network
We then explored on foot via limestone pathways with our guide pointing out sculptured rock formations and a mighty rushing underground waterfall
We then boarded a small boat which glided through the darkness, and we saw a magical display of thousands of glow worms. This was a brilliant experience and excursion and Is thoroughly recommended

This is a brilliant trip. We have done the Waitomo Cave glow worms on The North Island, and while there are fewer in this cave and the caves are smaller, the whole experience, the talks, the boat cruise, and the incredible cave was so much better.
It all starts with a lovely cruise across Lake Te Anau where you then get split up into different groups. It doesn't matter which group you are in as you all do the same things, just in a different order. So we did the talk and video first, followed by the rain forest experience, and finally the caves last.
This is not for the infirm or someone with a bad back as you do need to crouch and 'waddle' for about 20 metres to get into the cave. But once in, you can stand up again and the metal walkways above the river ensure you don't get your feet wet and take you over all the obstacles.
A great experience which we did with Real Journeys. I can't recommend this highly enough.

I know there are many sites around the world you can see glowworms but this tour is so different. Harry (Potter) our guide was full of very interesting information on all things glowworm and also provided a lot of information on the formation of the underground caves,. After a short walk through the cave we reached an underground jetty where we stepped into a small dinghy and in complete darkness Harry used a wall mounted chain to pull us along a section filled with glowworms. What an absolutely marvellous experience. Once back at the kiosk we were given a short slideshow lecture on the life and times of the glowworm, overall a fantastic experience. I should add that the boat ride to the glowworms was also interesting with informative information on Lake Te Anau as well as a slight detour along the way to highlight some of the more picturesque aspects of Lake Te Anau

Fabulous afternoon with fantastic tour guides. We started our tour with a quick trip across Lake Te Anau in a comfy catamaran with commentary and complimentary tea / coffee or water. Then it's a short walk and wait before your tour guide takes you into the cave. The walk is easy and gentle ducking under a few low ceilings lasting about 10 minutes before getting into a small boat to see the glow worms. They are magical and so close. It's incredible. We got a huge discount by booking the Milford Sound and Glow Worms tours together. Highly recommended for a great afternoon out.

It was a last minute decision to take the Real Journies cruise/visit to the Te Anau Glow Worm Caves.
Following a 20 minute cruise across the lake on a modern and comfortable catamaran, we disembarked near the glow worm caves. We followed our guide, and after some stooping and ducking for the first 20m or so could stand upright. We walked along sturdy walkways up into the cave system and were soon rewarded by the specks of light from the bioluminescent glow worms which became more intense as our eyes became accustomed to the dark. Then all 8 of us boarded a boat and the guide pulled us silently along via a rope into a series of caverns illuminated by the large number of tiny glow worms.
This was a wonderful experience, different and somehow more intimate compared with the also excellent Waitomo Caves in the North Island. This is not to be missed, but could be challenging if you have moderate or severe mobility issues due to the stooping and ducking down, and steps required.

I don't understand the question.
We made only one visit.
Written 26 March 2020
Is the morning tour at 745am or night tour at 930pm better? Just want to make full use of the price I'm paying for this tour.
Written 23 January 2020
For 9.30pm tour, it’s a bit late and the sky becomes dark, thus you may not have good fjord view during the first 30mins of boat ride. However, if you prefer dinner first and tour later with no consideration of view during boat ride, then 9.30pm should be ok with you.

Is there any rain protection on the small boat?
Written 19 December 2019
Hi there,
The vessel that transfers you across Lake Te Anau has a passenger saloon with free tea and coffee, so you are protected from the rain.
Thanks,
The team at Real Journeys.

Hi, we are visiting in January, do we need to pre book, do particular times sell out ? And if so how far in advance is necessary ?
Written 14 October 2019
We didn't pre book anything except logging, and had no problems. There are several tours every day, and we are flexible. We booked when we arrived to TeAnau evening before, and got on the tour in middle of the day, since morning tours were booked. So if you have limited time and have a list of things you may want book early. The same with Milford sound, since we came to the office the evening we arrived in TeAnau, we could only get the boat tour, while the kayaking was booked.
Written 14 October 2019
Is this tour strenuous for people with walking impediments?
Written 13 October 2019
Yes, in the caves it is very dark and walking on a steel cat walk path! It is narrow & quite unnerving! At the top there is a small raft type boat that cruises around the pitch black caves, difficult to get into even with help! Don't think I would go into the caves with the narrow cat walk with walking impediments!
There is about a 1/2 hour ride on a boat to the Glow Worm Caves from the shore line of Lake Te Anau! We loved it, but lots of bending through the narrow caves!
Written 13 October 2019
How can we get there from the ship docks?

we are planning to visit the glow worm Caves on the 10th October 2018 but we will be arriving in Te Anau about mid afternoon and was planning to go on the 4.30 departure- if we missed that it was possible to go on the next tour? is it essential to pre book in October?
Written 28 May 2018
I would look to go during the day, as the boat ride over has fantastic views and should you miss the boat you will not automatically get on the next boat.
Written 30 June 2018
We will be visiting the area June 1-19 and traveling by camper van. I realize this is your winter time, we are from Hawaii. Will your tours be operating during this time? Nearby campsite recommendations?
Written 5 March 2018
Check out realjourneys they run the trips to the caves. Roads and weather in Fiordland is variable, we got caught with a large snow fall a few years ago in the area in early June, but if you can handle the cold and have flexible days, it is great.
The trips to the caves seem to run through all seasons. I am unsure of the camp sites at this time of year, but my son liked the one at Manapouri.
Hope this helps
