About
Hanging Tree offers one of the most welcoming boutique cellar doors in the Hunter Valley - set in an old cowshed, teeming with history & character! Set over 40 acres, we produce a range of sparkling, whites, reds, sweet/dessert & fortified wines. The grounds are family & pet friendly - with our own 3 Labradors, a giant chess board & other fun games onsite. So pop in & try our award-winning wines; or enjoy our local cheese platter, estate-grown olives, tapenades or olive oil while overlooking the rose garden, duck pond, and the Brokenback mountain Ranges. Also on site is the Hanging Tree Homestead - a luxury 4 bedroom / 4 bathroom accomodation on the vineyard, perfect for your next getaway!

We dropped into Hanging Tree Wines yesterday as a group of 6, as our driver Owen from Chase Limousines suggested we had to try the port & muscat. Wow, the Torp port was incredible, the owner talked about the history of the winery and the port itself, a very smooth variety port and so nice. We were glad we popped into Hanging Tree as we all left with some amazing port and muscat. Thank you to our hosts at Hanging Tree Winery for looking after us yesterday.

I stayed at the Homestead for 2 nights last weekend and booked a 4pm wine tasting for our first afternoon. We were a group of senior friends one of whom was quite frail and unable to attend the complimentary wine tasting that those of us who did, found to be disappointing. It was a very cold, wet day but we were seated outside despite our age and two small coughing children and 4 dogs kept hovering around us (one even climbing on the tables), the former after the dogs and the latter after the small cheese platter I had purchased. The amount of each wine poured was miniscule and, when one our group politely asked if she could have our missing friend's share of one of the wines, the reply was an abrupt NO! Our server was very knowledgeable but not friendly.
The scrupulously clean Homestead however is really lovely and would be perfect for events when the weather is good. Sadly it was not for us with torrential rain keeping us indoors for the remainder of our stay. The view that we saw though when the sun shone briefly on our last morning is absolutely stunning and there are lots of seating areas on the surrounding verandah from which it can be enjoyed. There was a plentiful supply of wood and we made good use of it in the stone fireplace that kept us snug and warm in the enormous living area.
There are some things in the Homestead that need improvement though to get that extra star. They are:
Provide a floor plan so it is clear that 2 of the bathrooms are NOT ensuite. Also, we should have been advised that three of the bathrooms are unsuitable for the elderly (no railing in 2 and shower over a very high bathtub in 1).
Ensure that tea towels are provided (there were none).
Provide enough dishwasher tablets for each day your guests stay (there was only 1 when we needed 3). The liquid provided is only a rinse aid.
Update appliance instruction booklets (existing booklets are for non existent appliances and there are none for the current appliances)
Check electronic equipment. Most remotes seem to be redundant.
Kitchen drawers need reorganising and dinnerware needs updating.

Great place to chill out on the terrace overlooking the pond and fountain. We had a moscato and bought some of their peanuts which were delicious and a 300g bag was only $10. It is a lovely setting with gardens and some other nice outdoor areas on the other side.
The inside can be all closed off and airconditioned in Summer as it is only November and yet very warm as it is a tin roof so that is a great ability to have. They have good facilities on site. They have cheese platters for $30. Wine tastings were $10 but as we knew we wanted a moscato to drink there, they let us taste that one plus a late picked verdhelo without charging us the fee which was nice.
The name of Hanging Tree Wines comes from the big tree at the gate entrance where they used to hang their meat (not people) We had a bit of entertainment as people came who had two dogs and one of them got into the pond and was trying to shake itself near one of the staff. It was so funny and then that dog went through the inside and back out again leaving wet paw marks. The other dog had a see through cone around it's neck as must have had an operation and that was hilarious... cant help but laugh but probably frustrating for the dog.
The staff were very friendly and it's such a relaxed atmosphere. I'd be happy to come back here again.

Unforgettable experience at Hanging Tree Wines. We were surrounded by beautiful garden with flowers, herbs, and spices. There were three friendly dogs, birds, chickens, and horses.
We got to try many great wines, though the wine tasting not redeemable when you purchase. The lady who served us was lovely.

We received a very warm welcome. We were invited in by Lauren and given a very friendly and hospitable wine tasting experience. Lauren had extensive knowledge of the wines and it genuinely felt like we were sitting with an old friend. The wines we requested to taste were exceptional. All in all a wonderful place to visit. We will definitely be back again. Thank you Lauren from Mark and Mariane.

Should have know better, as when we arrived the day before at 4.30pm we were met with icy stares and told they close at 5pm so no time to taste wine. Undeterred by the dour faces and lured in by the 5 star reviews, we booked for the following day at 3. 30pm. Same icy stares and dour faces. Cheese platter too small so had to order another. Minuscule amounts of wine, even by wine tasting standards. No explanation of any of the wines. Could not wait to get out. And as for the dogs being an attraction, one sat drooling staring at us eating, and the other kept jumping on our laps. Dreadful from start to finish, please don't waste your time when so many other warm and welcoming wineries exist.

If you want to experience a great wine tasting afternoon you must stop in to Hanging Tree wines. Our hosts Uncle Ken and Kiwi Cazza take wine tasting to another dimension. Beautiful surroundings, great hosts and with wines to entice every palate this winery is not to be missed. We have visited many of the Hunters wineries in the past years but never had such a welcoming and entertaining time as we did this afternoon. Number 1 in our eyes 🏆
PS Cant wait to try the new Caz Shiraz

Lovely location, very quiet and peaceful. Excellent array of areas to taste from, seated of course. Polly our attendant was very pleasant friendly and knowledgeable. Wines quite nice of the 5 I tasted only one not to my liking. Can highly recommend the Pinot Grigio, Fume Blanc and recommend the Verdelho. Hubby recommends the sparkling Shiraz.

A stunning mixture of rustic beauty. A pleasant breeze after so many modern and large scale cellar doors. hanging tree chardonnay was the winner wine for this trip for me but other wines were also good

As a red wine drinker I love the wines produced by Hanging Tree. Nestled in a beautiful spot with mountain views there are a number of wonderful wines to experience. We loved the sparkling red and sweet Shiraz. If you are in the hunter this is a must visit winery even if it is just to pet Vodka the friendly dog :)
